Khalifa University And LODD Autonomous Sign MoU To Advance Electric Powertrain And Aerospace Mobility Research
Khalifa University of Science and Technology and LODD Autonomous announce a new Memorandum of Understanding that links academic research with industry practice in the UAE. The MoU centres on electric powertrain design, hybrid vertical take-off and landing unmanned aerial vehicles, advanced air mobility solutions, and expanded hands-on training for Khalifa University students.
The collaboration supports the UAE’s strategy to advance next-generation aviation technologies and sustainable air transport. Joint work will target hybrid VTOL unmanned aerial vehicles, drawing on Khalifa University’s research capacity and LODD Autonomous’ operational expertise. The partnership aims to accelerate development of electric propulsion and advanced aerospace mobility tailored to regional requirements.

A key element of the MoU is a pilot project in Electric Powertrain Analysis and Design for undergraduate engineering students at Khalifa University. The partners also plan opportunities for sponsored graduate research under the University’s Advanced Power and Energy Center. This structure links classroom learning, specialised laboratories, and industry requirements in electric aviation systems.
| Collaboration Area | Planned Activities |
|---|---|
| Electric powertrain development | Pilot project, design analysis, graduate research with APEC |
| Advanced aerospace mobility | Hybrid VTOL UAV work, technical lectures, joint visits |
| Student experiential learning | Internships, industry–academic visits, exposure to real operations |
The agreement includes joint technical lectures, coordinated industry–academic visits, and internship placements at LODD Autonomous facilities in Abu Dhabi. These activities aim to build practical engineering skills, expose students to live aerospace projects, and align course content with operational needs in advanced air mobility and electric aviation technologies.
Professor Ebrahim Al Hajri said, "Khalifa University’s partnership with LODD Autonomous reflects our commitment to nurturing the next generation of engineering talent who will lead the advancement of sustainable aviation, advanced mobility, and clean energy technologies. The partnership underscores Abu Dhabi’s growing ecosystem for aerospace innovation and Khalifa University’s continued role as a hub for cutting-edge research and workforce development. By working with innovative industry partners like LODD, we ensure our students gain exposure to real world challenges and contribute meaningfully to the UAE’s future-focused sectors." Rashid Mattar Al Manai said, "Working with Khalifa University allows us to engage directly with young engineers and researchers while supporting the growth of advanced air mobility solutions in the UAE. This MoU represents an important step in aligning academic research with real operational needs."
The MoU is signed by Professor Ebrahim Al Hajri, President of Khalifa University, and Rashid Mattar Al Manai, Chief Executive Officer of LODD Autonomous. Through this framework, both parties intend to build a sustainable talent pipeline, support Abu Dhabi’s aerospace innovation ecosystem, and advance practical research in electric powertrain systems and hybrid VTOL UAV operations.
