Khalifa University Collaborates With Guangzhou Baiyun Electric To Launch Joint Innovation Laboratory For Sustainable Energy

Khalifa University of Science and Technology has partnered with Guangzhou Baiyun Electric Equipment Co., Ltd. (BYE) from China. This collaboration aims to create a joint innovation lab focused on sustainable energy and electrification technologies. The agreement was formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by Professor Ebrahim Al Hajri, President of Khalifa University, and Dezhao Hu, Chairman of BYE.

The partnership will focus on developing projects that cater to the power grid needs of the GCC region. It will also explore renewable energy integration, storage systems, advanced power electronics, hybrid AC/DC transmission networks, transportation electrification, green hydrogen applications, seamless data centre integration, and AI-driven power systems.

Khalifa University and BYE Launch Innovation Lab

Professor Al Hajri emphasised the importance of this collaboration by stating, "This partnership with Guangzhou Baiyun reflects our commitment to driving innovation in clean energy and supporting the UAE’s vision for a sustainable future, especially through energy transition and integration." He highlighted how combining BYE’s products with APEC’s expertise will speed up energy system transformation in the GCC region and beyond.

Hu echoed these sentiments by saying, "This partnership with Khalifa University marks a significant strategic milestone. We are fully committed to translating this vision into reality, leveraging our combined industrial and academic strengths to forge synergies that will drive our shared expansion across the GCC region and the global market."

Khalifa University students stand to gain significantly from this partnership. They will have access to summer internships and paid co-op placements at BYE’s industrial and R&D facilities. This initiative aims to facilitate knowledge exchange and talent development crucial for the Middle East’s evolving energy sector.

The MoU also includes an annual training programme designed to develop at least five specialised professionals in power equipment technology each year. Additionally, joint technical lectures and seminars will be organised for UAE industry stakeholders.

Research Collaboration

The Advanced Power and Energy Centre (APEC) at Khalifa University will serve as BYE's technology R&D hub. APEC's laboratories will be accessible to BYE researchers for developing joint industrial-academic research projects. In return, APEC researchers will have access to BYE labs, ensuring full integration between both teams.

This collaboration is expected to foster technical exchanges and joint seminars aimed at engaging local industry stakeholders effectively. Such initiatives are vital for advancing research in sustainable energy solutions tailored specifically for regional needs.

This strategic alliance between Khalifa University and BYE is set to enhance innovation in clean energy technologies while supporting educational growth through practical experiences for students. By leveraging their combined strengths, both institutions aim to make significant contributions towards sustainable development goals within the GCC region and globally.
