Jafza's Four Decades Of Impact On Dubai's Economic Landscape And Global Trade

H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, emphasised the significance of the Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza) in Dubai's growth. He praised Jafza as a model that has strengthened Dubai’s global trade and logistics standing over 40 years. "We take pride in what DP World has achieved through Jafza – not only in supporting economic diversification and expanding the investment base, but also in its active contribution to building a resilient economic system that keeps pace with global challenges and fosters the growth of supply chains and trade by enabling global partnerships. We look forward to an even greater role for Jafza in driving Dubai’s comprehensive economic growth and supporting global trade through a unique ecosystem that combines innovation, integrated services, and multimodal connectivity – by land, sea, and air."

Jafza is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, marking four decades of promoting trade and supporting business expansion globally. Established officially in 1985 under His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's leadership, it was the Middle East's first designated free zone. The late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum initiated this vision on 6 May 1980.

Over two decades, Jafza attracted over AED110 billion in investments. It now contributes 36% of Dubai’s GDP alongside the integrated Jebel Ali ecosystem. In 2024, it facilitated AED713 billion in non-oil trade, marking a 15% increase from 2023. The free zone accounted for 74% of Dubai’s FDI in manufacturing, trade, and transport sectors last year.

Jafza supports over 11,000 businesses from 157 countries today, including more than 100 Fortune 500 companies. From just 19 founding companies in 1985, it has grown significantly. The free zone employs over 160,000 people across various industries like logistics and manufacturing.

In 2024, Financial Times' fDi Intelligence named Jafza the top global free zone and leader in industrial sustainability categories. Its model is replicated by DP World across several economic zones worldwide. These include locations like the Dominicana Economic Zone in the Dominican Republic and London Gateway in the UK.

Jafza aims for carbon neutrality by 2040 and net-zero emissions by 2050 under UAE’s Net Zero strategy. It is fully powered by renewable energy through International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECS) from Dubai Electricity and Water Authority. The free zone hosts the largest distributed solar rooftop project in the Middle East.

Future Prospects and Leadership Insights

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World stated: "Jafza’s 40th anniversary is a celebration of our customers and the visionary leadership which has made Dubai a beacon for international trade." Abdulla Bin Damithan added: "Our success over the past 40 years has always been rooted in our commitment to our customers."

The free zone plans to divert over 80% of waste from landfills by 2026 to support UAE’s circular economy transition. As it enters its fifth decade, Jafza continues to set benchmarks for innovation and sustainability globally.
