IWGA Launches Comprehensive Strategy For The World Games Development Through 2034
The International World Games Association (IWGA) has unveiled a new strategic roadmap, titled IWGA Strategy 2025–2034: Agenda for the Development of The World Games and the IWGA. This strategy was introduced at the IWGA Annual General Meeting and crafted in collaboration with Quantum Consultancy, a long-time partner in reporting and evaluation.
Developed through a year-long consultation process, the strategy involved various stakeholders such as IWGA member federations, National Olympic Committees (NOCs), National Sports Organisations (NSOs), athletes, host cities, partners, media, and IWGA leadership and staff. It is structured around seven strategic pillars: The World Games, Athlete Experience & Development, Member & Stakeholder Engagement, Commercial Growth, Event Innovation & Expansion, Sustainability, and Organisational Excellence.

The strategy aims to position The World Games as a global leader in inclusive, sustainable, and athlete-focused sporting excellence. Jan Fransoo, an IWGA Executive Committee Member who led the working group for this Strategy Paper, stated that it serves as a roadmap for innovation and inclusivity. "The strategy is a roadmap for innovation, impact and inclusivity — one that embraces change and empowers athletes, members, and partners," he said.
Implementation mechanisms are also part of the strategy. These include developing Key Result Areas (KRAs), providing ongoing progress reports, and conducting a mid-cycle review after The World Games 2029 in Karlsruhe, Germany. This ensures that the IWGA remains agile and responsive to changes in the global sports landscape.
The next edition of The World Games will take place in Chengdu, China from 7th to 17th August 2025. This event will feature approximately 5,000 participants from over 100 countries. The strategy highlights IWGA’s dedication to delivering world-class events that have social impact and global resonance.
This comprehensive plan sets a clear agenda for future development by focusing on key areas like commercial growth and event innovation. It aims to foster an environment where athletes can thrive while ensuring sustainability and organisational excellence.
The introduction of this strategic roadmap marks a significant step forward for the IWGA. By aligning with evolving global sports trends, it seeks to enhance its role as a catalyst for positive change within the sporting community worldwide.
