Indian States Advance Global Connections With Videsh Sampark Programme

Indian states are increasingly engaging with the global community, complementing the efforts of the federal government, its agencies, and the diaspora. Uttarakhand is the latest state to participate in this outreach through a 'Videsh Sampark' programme organised by the Ministry of External Affairs. This initiative took place over the weekend in Dehradun, the state's capital.

The event was spearheaded by Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs responsible for overseas Indian affairs, alongside Radha Raturi, Chief Secretary of the Uttarakhand government. Senior officials from both the Ministry and state government, as well as representatives from businesses, Chambers of Commerce, and overseas recruiting agencies in Uttarakhand, were present.

States Expand Global Reach

One key objective of Videsh Sampark is to streamline overseas employment opportunities for skilled and qualified individuals from Uttarakhand. Additionally, it aims to address consular services, passport issues, and other diaspora-related concerns. "The Ministry also made a presentation on how Uttarakhand, with its rich cultural heritage, strategic location, and natural beauty could leverage its unique strengths to promote international tourism and investments within its territory," a press release at the conclusion of the outreach stated.

The Ministry has established a "States Division" to coordinate with various Indian states and union territories. This division facilitates their efforts to promote exports and tourism while attracting more overseas investments and expertise. The Ministry informed Parliament about this upon setting up the Division.

Several states have already engaged in similar foreign contact programmes. These include Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Telangana, and Tripura. "The Ministry plans to continue with this initiative with other Indian states in the future," according to the press release.

This outreach programme not only aims to enhance employment opportunities abroad but also seeks to boost international tourism and investment in Uttarakhand by showcasing its unique attributes. The collaborative efforts between state governments and federal agencies are crucial for achieving these goals.

By participating in such initiatives, Indian states can better position themselves on the global stage. This helps them attract investments and promote their cultural heritage effectively. The ongoing collaboration between different levels of government ensures that these outreach programmes are successful.

The Videsh Sampark initiative exemplifies how local governments can work alongside national bodies to achieve common objectives. It highlights the importance of coordinated efforts in promoting economic growth and cultural exchange.
