Independence Square Project Inaugurated By Sharjah Ruler To Enhance Urban Aesthetics

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the Independence Square project on Tuesday morning. This event marked the completion of significant works, including the construction of the Independence Monument and development of the surrounding square and buildings. The inauguration coincided with the UAE's 54th Eid Al Etihad celebrations, commemorating the country's independence on 2nd December 1971.

The Ruler of Sharjah unveiled a commemorative plaque for the 34-metre-high monument at the square's centre. This monument is topped with a seven-pointed star symbolising the seven emirates. It serves as an urban landmark reflecting historical and national significance, with its four sides displaying information about the UAE’s independence.

The main plaque notes that on 2nd December 1971, the Rulers of the Emirates met to form a state called the United Arab Emirates after gaining independence from Britain. Another plaque records British control over the Emirates lasted 151 years, starting from a treaty signed by the Rulers on 8th January 1820.

A third plaque highlights that Sharjah Civil Air Station was established on 22nd July 1932. On 2nd December 1971, while the British military base was abolished, this civil air station continued operations. The final plaque mentions that establishing a British military base on this site contradicted an agreement between Sharjah and Britain.

The Ruler toured Independence Square to learn about two fountains flanking the monument, adding dynamic and aesthetic elements to the site. He also viewed landscaping works, green areas, pedestrian pathways, and a new lighting system enhancing design elements and visual appeal.

He received a briefing on redeveloping buildings around the square. This included enhancing façades of 24 buildings with architectural detailing consistent with Sharjah’s identity. Additionally, 95 commercial signboards were replaced for harmony in urban settings alongside modern lighting to highlight building aesthetics at night.

Infrastructure Improvements

Infrastructure works involved upgrading roads, pavements, and parking areas to improve traffic flow and safety. All lighting columns around the square were replaced as part of these developments. These efforts reflect Sheikh Dr. Sultan's vision to enhance urban aesthetics and create an integrated environment for residents and visitors.

The redevelopment forms part of broader urban projects across Sharjah aimed at enhancing vital areas while preserving cultural heritage for residents and visitors alike. This renewal embodies Sharjah’s commitment to unity, development, and national identity by improving quality of life and visual appeal in the emirate.

Mosque Restoration Efforts

The Ruler also inaugurated Imam Al-Nawawi Mosque adjacent to Independence Square. Originally built in 1995, it was restored in Fatimid architectural style following his directives to preserve mosques as icons of Sharjah. He unveiled a commemorative plaque marking its official reopening.

During his visit to Imam Al-Nawawi Mosque, Sheikh Dr. Sultan prayed there before reviewing renovation works completed under his guidance. These included raising minaret heights along with mosque walls; adding an external arcade; upgrading facilities; all aimed at enhancing religious roles while meeting needs of worshippers.

Accompanying him during these inaugurations were Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi (Chairman Department Government Relations), Sheikh Mohammed bin Humaid Al Qasimi (Chairman Department Statistics Community Development), Sheikh Majid bin Sultan Al Qasimi (Chairman Districts Affairs Department), Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al Owais (Minister State Federal National Council Affairs) among other senior officials.
