IROS 2024 Opens In Abu Dhabi With Focus On Robotics For Sustainable Development
The 36th IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) commenced on 14th October 2024 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). Professor Ebrahim Al Hajri, President of Khalifa University of Science and Technology, highlighted the event's alignment with the UAE Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031. He acknowledged the significant role played by UAE stakeholders, global scientists, and regional academics in hosting this prestigious conference.
Themed ‘Robotics for Sustainable Development’, IROS 2024 will continue until 18th October. Professor Al Hajri expressed pride in hosting the event, noting that it provides a platform for collaboration on advanced research. He stated, "This is a proud moment for the UAE and for Khalifa University as we host IROS 2024 in Abu Dhabi." The conference aims to foster growth opportunities within the MENA region while contributing to global innovation in robotics and artificial intelligence.

On its opening day, IROS 2024 featured nine tutorial sessions and 31 technical workshops. Researchers, scientists, and academics from universities, research institutions, and leading corporations worldwide engaged in discussions on various robotics technologies. These sessions provided an opportunity for knowledge exchange among participants.
The event also includes several competitions designed to inspire creativity in robotics. Starting on 14th October, challenges such as the euROBIN Manipulation, F1 Tenth Autonomous Racing Competition, and IEEE/RAS Quadruped Robot Challenge (QRC) took place. These competitions focus on aspects like robot manipulation, athletic intelligence, remote navigation, underwater robotics, perception, and sensing.
A total of 13 forums are scheduled during the conference. The ‘Robots for Sustainability and Sustainable Robots’ forum is set for 15th October. From 16th to 18th October, four forums will be held each day. These forums aim to explore sustainable practices within robotics.
Exhibits and Networking Opportunities
IROS 2024 showcases cutting-edge technologies through exhibits that highlight next-generation sustainable robotics. Attendees have shown keen interest in these displays. Additionally, poster sessions, keynotes, panel discussions, and networking events are planned throughout the conference days to facilitate further interaction among participants.
This international gathering not only highlights advancements in robotics but also strengthens ties between global researchers and local stakeholders. By hosting such events, Khalifa University continues to support innovation within the UAE while contributing to broader scientific progress.
