IDRA World Congress 2024 Highlights Leadership Actions For Global Water Resilience Amid Climate Challenges
The International Desalination and Water Reuse World Congress (IDRA) 2024, hosted by the Department of Energy – Abu Dhabi (DoE), is focusing on 'Addressing Water Scarcity.' This event has gathered global leaders, industry experts, and innovators at the Leaders Summit. The summit offers a platform for discussions and collaborations aimed at enhancing global water resilience.
During the opening remarks, Awaidha Murshed Al Marar, Chairman of the DoE, stressed the importance of collaboration and innovation. He stated, "Leadership is about speaking from the heart and staying true to what you believe in. To lead in the water sector, we must first commit to learning, collaboration, and innovation. I encourage both private and government entities to embrace a win-win mindset."

Al Marar also highlighted the interconnectedness of sustainable development. He mentioned that while the DoE is just one part of UAE's leadership in water management, it remains committed to ensuring a sustainable future for people and the environment. The department aims to strengthen community ties through progress and responsibility.

A session on Green Financing for Water Security explored innovative funding mechanisms to support scalable solutions for water scarcity.
A colloquium on Corporate Leadership in Addressing Water Security was held during the summit. Industry leaders shared diverse perspectives on tackling global water challenges. Over 35 CEOs attended this session, including representatives from Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative; Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC); LG Water Solutions; and Toray Industries. Their insights will be compiled into a collective white paper.
Shannon McCarthy, Secretary General of IDRA, remarked on the significance of this gathering: "As new technologies introduce the future of global water scarcity solutions, the IDRA Leaders Summit serves as a critical opportunity for uniting decision-makers and industry leaders to accelerate sustainable, impactful solutions." She added that this exclusive event encourages cross-sector collaboration and innovative thinking.
Showcasing Abu Dhabi's Achievements
The Congress runs until December 12th at ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi. It offers executive attendees various experiences showcasing Abu Dhabi’s achievements in addressing water scarcity. Tours are available to key sites like Al Taweelah Power and Desalination Complex, soon hosting the world’s largest RO desalination plant; Masdar City; and Noor Abu Dhabi Solar Park.
This event underscores Abu Dhabi's commitment to sustainability and innovation in water management. By bringing together leaders from different sectors, it aims to foster actionable strategies for lasting global change in water security.
