Now These GCC Residents Can Make UPI Payments Via ICICI Bank With International Mobile Numbers

ICICI Bank has recently introduced a new service that allows its Non-Resident Indian (NRI) customers to utilize their international mobile numbers for making UPI (Unified Payments Interface) payments in India. This development significantly improves the ease with which these customers can conduct everyday transactions such as paying utility bills, settling merchant and e-commerce transactions without needing to register an Indian mobile number.

Through its mobile banking application, iMobile Pay, ICICI Bank has made this innovative service accessible. This marks a departure from the previous requirement for NRIs to have an Indian mobile number linked to their accounts for UPI transactions. The bank has collaborated with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to utilize the international UPI infrastructure, making this service available in 10 countries, including the USA, UK, UAE, Canada, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

Sidharatha Mishra, Head of Digital Channels and Partnerships at ICICI Bank, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with NPCI that led to the launch of this service. He highlighted the convenience this facility offers to ICICI Bank's NRI customers, allowing them to bypass the need for an Indian mobile number for UPI payments. This initiative not only enhances the payment experience for NRI customers but also aims to strengthen and transform the digital payments ecosystem on a global scale. The response from NRI customers has been positive, with many already utilizing the new facility.

Activation Process Simplified

To activate the UPI service using an international mobile number, ICICI Bank has outlined a simple process for its customers through the iMobile Pay app. Customers need to log in to the app, navigate to the 'UPI Payments' section, and verify their mobile number. Following verification, they can manage their profile, create a new UPI ID from the suggested options, select their account number, and submit the details to activate the service.

This initiative by ICICI Bank and NPCI is a significant step towards simplifying cross-border transactions for NRIs, ensuring they can participate in India's digital economy seamlessly. By enabling payments through international mobile numbers, ICICI Bank has removed a major barrier for its NRI customers, facilitating easier and more secure transactions.
