ICBA Honoured With FAO's Global Technical Recognition For Sustainable Plant Production Efforts
The International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) has been acknowledged by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) for its significant contributions to sustainable agriculture. This recognition was awarded during FAO’s inaugural Global Technical Recognition Ceremony on 15th October 2025, coinciding with the organisation’s 80th anniversary and World Food Day celebrations in Rome, Italy.
Dr. Qu Dongyu, FAO Director-General, presented the award to Dr. Tarifa Alzaabi, ICBA's Director General. The accolade highlights ICBA's leadership in fostering sustainable agriculture in saline and arid regions. This initiative is FAO’s first Global Technical Recognition, honouring institutions that transform agrifood systems through scientific innovation and impact.

For nearly 25 years, ICBA has been at the forefront of developing sustainable plant production systems. These systems enhance soil health, optimise water usage, and increase productivity. By conserving diverse crop germplasm, ICBA has introduced stress-tolerant crops that offer new opportunities for food security in areas affected by salinity and drought.
Dr. Tarifa Alzaabi expressed gratitude for the recognition: "We are deeply honoured by this recognition from FAO, which underscores the power of collaborative science and innovation in addressing global agricultural challenges. It reflects the dedication of our scientists, experts, and partners who work together to build resilient and sustainable food systems."
Based in the United Arab Emirates, ICBA operates in over 40 countries. The Centre integrates science, technology, and policy to address water scarcity, soil degradation, and food insecurity. This recognition aligns with ICBA’s strategy for 2024–2034, which focuses on science-based solutions to enhance productivity and climate resilience in challenging environments.
Dr. Alzaabi dedicated this achievement to ICBA's founders: "We dedicate this achievement to the founders of the Centre, the Government of the United Arab Emirates and the Islamic Development Bank, whose vision and continued support laid the foundation for ICBA’s mission."
Commitment to Sustainable Development
This award also acknowledges the trust and commitment of ICBA's partners and funders who enable advancements in research and knowledge exchange. Their support empowers communities, strengthens livelihoods, and contributes to global food security and sustainability.
The ceremony took place alongside World Food Day 2025 under the theme "Hand in hand for better food and a better future". It celebrated progress towards sustainable production practices that align with FAO’s Four Betters: Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life.
This recognition marks a milestone as ICBA continues its mission to develop climate-resilient agricultural practices worldwide.
