Higher Education Committee Holds First Annual Meeting To Discuss Advancements In UAE Education Sector
The Higher Education Committee, led by Dr. Abdulrahman Al Awar, convened its inaugural annual meeting at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) in Al Ain. The discussions centred on national priorities in higher education and research, enhancing technical and vocational education, forming subcommittees, and reviewing UAEU’s achievements and future plans.
Dr. Abdulrahman Al Awar emphasised the committee's role in aligning higher education strategies with public education and labour market needs. He stated: "We are driving major transformations in higher education to align with national goals, shifting from a process-based model to an outcome-focused system that contributes to building a robust economy and society."

Shamma bint Sohail Al Mazrui highlighted the significance of the first meeting as a step towards strengthening the UAE’s higher education sector. She noted that the meeting focused on strategic paths, bridging gaps in the system, and aligning with global standards to develop an advanced educational environment.
The committee members discussed challenges in technical and vocational education, exploring solutions that align with labour market requirements. They highlighted community colleges' role in bridging educational gaps and aligning outputs with future job needs.
Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi pointed out the committee's aim to redesign higher education for societal and economic growth. He mentioned that many institutions are moving beyond theory-based learning to a flexible approach blending theory with practical skills, enhancing graduates' employability.
The meeting reviewed transformative initiatives led by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Discussions included supporting student journeys to increase employment rates, building impactful partnerships with institutions, and updating policies to align with national trends.
Achievements of UAEU
During the meeting, UAEU shared its achievements and future plans. Ranked 261st globally by QS and among the top 300 by Times Higher Education (THE), UAEU excels in scientific research, academic partnerships, sustainability, and climate change fields.
Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh stated: "Aligned with the UAE’s commitment to advancing higher education and scientific research, the Higher Education Committee plays a key role in shaping the nation’s future development."
Formation of Subcommittees
The proposal to form subcommittees under the Higher Education Committee was also discussed. These include a Coordinating Committee for Public Higher Education Institutions focusing on enhancing coordination between federal HEIs and digital connectivity.
The Advisory Committee for Higher Education and Future Skills will support national directives by proposing policies to improve system quality, assessing institutional performance, and fostering international collaboration.
Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh added: "Enhancing education and scientific research is key to realising our leadership’s vision for a knowledge-based economy." The committee's efforts aim to drive transformative shifts in the UAE’s higher education system.
