Harvard's International AI Conference In Dubai Explores Transformative Potential And Challenges Of Artificial Intelligence

The Digital Data Design Institute at Harvard, in partnership with the Harvard Business School Club of the GCC, recently organised its first International AI Conference at Dubai's Museum of the Future. This event brought together global leaders, academics, and innovators to discuss AI's challenges and potential. The conference emphasised AI's crucial role in shaping industries, organisations, and societies.

During a fireside chat, Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications, discussed the UAE's journey. "The focus of our founding fathers has always been on people—educating them, building the right infrastructure, and ensuring a sustainable balance between physical and human development. Today, we continue that legacy by leveraging AI to improve the lives of every person in this room and every future generation," he remarked.

Harvard AI Conference Highlights Future Challenges

Al Olama outlined the UAE's three-tiered AI strategy. It began with investments in infrastructure, regulations, and government capabilities. Recently, AI has been deployed across sectors like energy, education, health, and cyber security. Over 147 government applications are already in use. By 2031, the UAE aims to be a global leader in AI with measurable impacts on quality of life.

He highlighted using AI responsibly: "I believe we do not need to be an AI-first country. We are focused on being quality-of-life first. AI should not be a disruptive force; it should seamlessly integrate into our lives to make them better." For instance, UAE airports use AI-powered facial recognition for efficient immigration processes during peak travel times.

Al Olama stressed AI's impact on infrastructure development. Over five decades, significant resources were allocated to roads and bridges. Now, AI enables savings of 5–25% on large projects while improving safety and efficiency. "Whether it's optimising traffic flows through AI-powered systems or ensuring safety in billion-dollar projects," he stated.

Looking forward, Al Olama acknowledged uncertainties about AI's evolution but remained optimistic about its potential to enhance creativity and societal progress. "What amazes me is how AI allows people to express themselves in ways they never could before," he said.

Conference Highlights

The conference theme was "AI Elevate: From Readiness to Exponential Growth." Karim Lakhani delivered the keynote address. He announced an innovative AI-powered conference bot designed to archive dialogue from the event and an online course focusing on AI adoption crafted "by AI, for AI."

Lakhani explained that learning to use AI tools is challenging for senior leaders who must understand these technologies for adoption. "Adoption itself is the next hurdle—seeing the relevance of AI is not enough; it must be integrated into daily workflows," he noted.

Regional Leadership in AI

Saleh Lootah opened the conference by highlighting the Gulf region's unique position to lead the AI revolution. He stressed the importance of discussing future infrastructure and UAE’s leadership in impactful AI adoption. "This is not just another event; this is a platform for transformation," he said.

Lootah invoked Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s words: "Human beings...are the capital of the future." He urged attendees to think about creating initiatives with lasting impact: "Together We Can," echoing the club's motto.

The event saw over 400 participants attend in person and was supported by Abu Dhabi’s Technology Innovation Institute (TII). The UAE’s strategy reflects a commitment to balancing complex societal challenges with ethical considerations while leveraging AI responsibly for a brighter future.
