Hamdan Bin Mohammed Witnesses Launch Of New Global Mixed Martial Arts Championship In Dubai

H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, observed a significant agreement signing. This collaboration involves the Dubai Sports Council, Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), and the Professional Fighters League (PFL) to introduce a new global mixed martial arts (MMA) championship.

The newly announced Professional Fighters League Championship, named ‘Road to Dubai’, will feature international MMA events in various cities worldwide. The season finale is scheduled for 25th January 2025 at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai’s City Walk. This event marks the first time such a championship will be held in the Middle East.

Usman Nurmagomedov, known as the ‘Pride of Dagestan’, will headline this championship. He is an undefeated Bellator Lightweight World Champion with an 18-0 record. Nurmagomedov will defend his title against Ireland’s Paul ‘Big News’ Hughes, who recently achieved a significant victory at PFL’s Battle of the Giants by defeating AJ McKee.

The agreement aims to enhance Dubai's reputation as a premier destination for major international sports events. Sheikh Hamdan emphasised that this championship reflects the global sports community's trust in Dubai. The city is recognised for hosting diverse international tournaments and its dedication to ensuring their success.

This multi-year agreement also focuses on nurturing Emirati talent in mixed martial arts. It aims to prepare them for participation in international competitions, thereby boosting Dubai’s status on the global sports map with a particular emphasis on MMA.

Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of the Dubai Sports Council; Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment; and Pete Murray, CEO of the Professional Fighters League, signed this pivotal agreement. Their collaboration seeks to elevate both local and international MMA scenes.

Professional Fighters League's Role

The Professional Fighters League is renowned for featuring elite mixed martial artists like Usman Nurmagomedov alongside other top competitors vying for titles. The league is committed to fostering emerging Emirati fighters, providing them with opportunities to become future champions.

Recognised as a leading force in MMA globally, the Professional Fighters League is celebrated as one of the fastest-growing sports leagues worldwide. Its involvement underscores its dedication to advancing mixed martial arts within Dubai and beyond.
