Hamdan Bin Mohammed Reviews RTA’s AED 16 Billion Main Roads Development Plan For Enhanced Urban Mobility

H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, recently examined the Roads and Transport Authority's (RTA) initiatives to enhance urban mobility and infrastructure in Dubai. These initiatives include a significant AED16 billion plan for 2024-2027, which will introduce 22 projects to improve the city's road network, benefiting over six million residents and supporting Dubai's development goals.

During his visit to RTA headquarters, Sheikh Hamdan was welcomed by Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA. He reviewed a presentation highlighting the growth in public transport usage, which now serves 2.2 million riders daily. The road network has expanded from 8,715 lane-kilometres in 2006 to 18,990 lane-kilometres today.

The number of lanes across Dubai Creek increased from 16 to 61, while vehicle bridges and tunnels rose from 129 to 1,070. Pedestrian bridges and tunnels also grew significantly, including those for Dubai Metro and Tram. Cycling tracks expanded from 9 km to an impressive 557 km.

Sheikh Hamdan was briefed on the Al Fay Street Development Project. This strategic corridor extends from Al Khail Road through Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street to Emirates Road. It includes road construction totalling 12,900 metres and five intersections with bridges spanning 13,500 metres.

The Latifa bint Hamdan Street project is set to start next year. It covers a stretch of 12,200 metres from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Emirates Road. This development will add capacity for around 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

The Meydan Road project involves developing roads totalling 10,600 metres with bridges and tunnels adding capacity for approximately 22,000 vehicles per hour. Travel time from Umm Suqeim Street to Meydan Street extension will be reduced significantly.

Traffic Management Enhancements

Sheikh Hamdan reviewed plans for autonomous transport and AI integration in traffic management aimed at improving mobility in Dubai. The RTA is considering expanding the Dubai Tram network with trackless tram systems operating on virtual tracks using camera-guided painted lines.

The tram system is eco-friendly and cost-effective compared to traditional trams. Each tram can carry up to 300 passengers at speeds between 25-60 km/h on a single charge covering up to 100 km.

Public Transport Initiatives

The operational achievements of the Dubai Tram were highlighted as it approaches its tenth anniversary on November 11th, 2024. Since its launch, it has completed over 950,000 journeys serving around 60 million passengers with a punctuality rate of nearly perfect at 99.9 percent.

Plans are underway for extending dedicated bus and taxi lanes by adding six routes covering an additional length of about thirteen kilometres by years' end in support of Dubai’s Self-Driving Transport Strategy for economic benefits estimated at AED2.3 billion over ten years.

Sustainable Urban Transport Solutions

An autonomous bus equipped with advanced AI technologies was also showcased during Sheikh Hamdan's visit designed specifically for first-and-last-mile connectivity within urban areas accommodating ten-twenty passengers travelling safely at speeds up-to forty kilometres per hour.

The Commercial Transport (Logisty) Platform developed alongside private sector partners aims at enhancing commercial transportation services through fleet management features like booking tracking verification databases supporting Dubai’s Commercial Logistics Land Transport Strategy till year-end thirty-thirty-one connecting customers directly with providers efficiently digitally seamlessly
