Guatemala's Tourism Minister Highlights Plans To Boost Tourism And Trade With UAE
Guatemala is keen to enhance tourism and trade ties with the UAE, according to Harris Whitbeck, the country's Minister of Tourism. He highlighted Guatemala's consistent participation in the Arabian Travel Market over the past three years as a testament to its dedication to attracting more visitors from this region.
Whitbeck shared insights during an interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) at the World Governments Summit 2025 (WGS). He revealed that Guatemala welcomed over 3 million tourists last year, a 15% increase from the previous year. The minister anticipates this figure will grow to 3.5 million by 2025, driven by robust promotional efforts and involvement in international events like the Arabian Travel Market.

The minister emphasised the need to attract high-value tourists who stay longer and spend more, benefiting the local economy significantly. Guatemala is actively seeking partnerships with travel and tourism companies in the UAE and beyond. This includes inviting travel agents to explore Guatemala and promote it as a top tourist destination.
Efforts are also being made to collaborate with airlines to ease travel between Guatemala and the UAE. Whitbeck noted that these initiatives aim not only at increasing tourist numbers but also at ensuring sustainable tourism that supports long-term economic growth.
Guatemala is interested in expanding cultural exchanges with the UAE. In recent years, Guatemalan artists have worked alongside their counterparts in Sharjah. The minister expressed hopes for further strengthening these cultural ties moving forward.
Whitbeck stressed that Guatemala's focus extends beyond merely boosting tourist numbers. The country aims to attract quality visitors who contribute positively to sustainable tourism practices and economic development. He highlighted eco-friendly tourism experiences as crucial for preserving natural resources while providing lasting economic benefits.
The minister's remarks underscore Guatemala's strategic approach towards tourism, prioritising both quantity and quality of visitors. By fostering strong international partnerships and promoting sustainable practices, Guatemala aims for continued growth in its tourism sector.
