Guatemala To Enhance Tourism Via Better Air Links With UAE, Says Minister
Guatemala is actively seeking to enhance its air connectivity with the UAE, aiming to bolster its tourism sector through strategic participation in the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) in Dubai for the second consecutive year. The Central American nation's Minister of Tourism, Harris Whitbeck, conveyed to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) the significance of ATM as a platform for engaging in substantive discussions with airlines, building on a pre-existing yet unratified connectivity agreement between Guatemala and the UAE.
Whitbeck underscored the evident interest of UAE airlines in the Latin American market, highlighted by Emirates' current operations between Dubai and Mexico City and the anticipated route to Bogotá, Colombia, set to commence on 3rd June. The Guatemalan pavilion at ATM showcases the country's rich offerings in adventure tourism, fishing, and cultural experiences, supported by the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism's efforts to attract visitors from the region.

Traditional Guatemalan cuisine, prepared by skilled chefs using ancient ingredients like cocoa and cardamom, adds a unique flavor to the country's presentation at the event. "Guatemala is a country to be explored because it is home to many worlds," Whitbeck remarked, noting the strong affinity between Guatemala's diverse attractions and the interests of visitors from the UAE. He highlighted that tourists from the UAE, known for their extensive travel experience and higher purchasing power, are in search of new adventures, making Guatemala an ideal destination.
The country offers a blend of volcanoes, black sand beaches, lakes, mountains, and archaeological sites that tell a 3,000-year-old story. This combination of history, adventure, culture, and gastronomy positions Guatemala as an attractive destination for global travelers. To better understand and cater to its market, the Guatemalan Ministry of Tourism is leveraging Big Data programmes for more effective market segmentation and targeted marketing strategies.
Whitbeck emphasized the importance of developing new destinations in collaboration with local communities. By empowering these communities to share their stories and express their desired portrayal and offerings, Guatemala aims to provide more authentic and substantial experiences. The search for support from countries like the UAE to enhance tourism infrastructure is also a priority for Guatemala. "We need more hotels, more roads, more airports," Whitbeck stated, expressing his intention to initiate conversations with potential investors during his visit.
As part of his efforts to promote Guatemala's tourism sector, Whitbeck will meet with local authorities and companies in the UAE to showcase Guatemala's rich cultural heritage and build bridges for deeper understanding between Emirati and Guatemalan cultures. In 2023, Guatemala welcomed 2.6 million foreign tourists, primarily from Central America and the United States, underscoring its growing appeal as a global tourism destination.
