H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Launches GPT Historical Dictionary Project For Arabic Language

H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, introduced the GPT "Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language" project. This initiative was unveiled at the First Sharjah International Conference on AI & Linguistics (SICAL) at the American University of Sharjah on 17th and 18th October. The event featured Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi and over 50 experts from various fields.

The conference was organised in partnership with the Emirates Scholar Centre for Research and Studies (ESCRS), a branch of the Emirates Foundation for Science and Research. It brought together leaders from education, scientific research, culture, and technology sectors. The focus was on leveraging artificial intelligence to support and promote the Arabic language while addressing challenges posed by technological advancements.

H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan emphasised the importance of using modern technologies to preserve and enhance the Arabic language. He highlighted how AI can positively impact language preservation efforts. A visual presentation showcased the first version of the GPT Dictionary project, a credible digital platform using AI to explore Arabic vocabulary's history and roots.

The dictionary aims to improve research accuracy and ease access to linguistic information through advanced technologies. This aligns with Sharjah's commitment to elevating the Arabic language's status globally while safeguarding it against contemporary challenges.

Dr. Firas Habbal, President of ESCRS, along with Dr. Fawaz Habbal and Dr. Mohamed Safi Al Mosteghanemi, discussed key features of the GPT Dictionary. One feature, "Tahawar Ma’ie," allows non-Arabic speakers to hear answers to their queries in a chosen voice, addressing pronunciation difficulties.

Dr. Habbal explained that this feature makes the dictionary accessible beyond experts: "We recognised that non-Arabic speakers often struggle with pronunciation and diacritics, so we introduced the (Tahawar Ma’ie) feature to make the dictionary accessible to everyone, not just experts."

Visual Content for Modern Users

The "Visual Expression" feature caters to users who prefer visual content on social media platforms. Dr. Habbal noted: "We observed that most AI users prefer visual content on social media. In response, we developed this feature, allowing users to select templates from various social media platforms." This enables users to create complete video clips ready for publication.

Integrating AI with this dictionary allows access to over 20 million Arabic words for text creation and reading purposes. It also facilitates converting content into video clips while maintaining a continuous information stream through collaboration between relevant institutions.

A Valuable Educational Resource

The "Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language" is a significant scientific achievement documenting Arabic language evolution over time. By employing AI technologies, it provides researchers with an advanced tool for tracing word origins and usage throughout history.

This project aims not only at enhancing vocabulary use but also promoting its integration into modern technologies as an educational resource supporting curricula in educational institutions worldwide.

This initiative reflects Sharjah's dedication towards promoting global awareness about Arabic language heritage while ensuring its relevance amidst modern technological advancements.
