Gold Prices Retreat From Record Highs Amid Stronger US Dollar
On Tuesday, gold retreated from its recent record-breaking performance as the US dollar gained strength. This dip comes after the metal's value soared to unprecedented levels, fueled by a combination of factors including anticipations of interest rate cuts in the US and escalating geopolitical tensions. According to Reuters, spot gold saw a decrease of 0.6% to $2,410.73 per ounce by 0335 GMT, following a peak of $2,440.49 – a record high – on Monday.
Additionally, the futures market mirrored this downtrend with US gold futures declining by 1% to $2,414.00. The impact was not solely confined to gold; other precious metals also experienced downturns. Silver, after achieving a more than 11-year high in the previous session, dropped 1.5% to $31.35 an ounce. Notably, platinum and palladium also faced declines. Platinum decreased by 1.1% to $1,035.15, coming down from its highest point since 12th May 2023 recorded on Monday. Meanwhile, palladium suffered a 1.8% loss, bringing its value down to $1,008.91.
