Global Rehabilitation Conference 2024 Opens In Abu Dhabi Under Patronage Of H.H. Sheikh Khalid Bin Zayed

The Global Rehabilitation Conference 2024 commenced at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, running until 25th September 2024. H.H. Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination (ZHO), attended the event. This conference, themed "Work and Rehabilitation," is held under his patronage for the first time in the Middle East.

Abdullah Al Humaidan, Secretary-General of ZHO and Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa region at Rehabilitation International, emphasised the conference's dual purpose. It not only highlights achievements but also serves as a learning platform from global leaders and experts. The event reinforces justice and inclusion principles through shared experiences.

The conference features over 800 participants from more than 70 countries, including leaders, officials, experts, academics, and researchers in rehabilitation and healthcare sectors. They aim to improve the quality of life for People of Determination. Additionally, 20 local entities are involved, with remote access available for online participation in sessions and workshops.

A panel discussion titled "Empowering Diversity: Inclusion, Employment, and Participation of People of Determination" was moderated by Al Humaidan. It covered topics like developing public policies for inclusion and employment, retaining skilled labour through effective rehabilitation, pathways to inclusive work life, and enhancing economic empowerment for women with disabilities.

Al Humaidan stated that this conference is crucial in shaping best practices in inclusivity and transformational solutions globally. He said it lays a foundation for a more inclusive future by bringing together global experts, policymakers, and investors to discuss these issues.

"In the UAE," he continued, "our commitment to the rights and inclusion of People of Determination is a fundamental pillar of our national visions and strategies." He highlighted that this event marks a pivotal moment in creating opportunities for all individuals to thrive regardless of their abilities.

Technological Advancements in Rehabilitation

Zhang Haidi, Chairwoman of Rehabilitation International, spoke about how rehabilitation technologies are transforming lives. She mentioned examples such as cochlear implants helping those with hearing impairments regain hearing ability and exoskeleton technology enabling people with spinal cord injuries to walk again.

"Rehabilitation technologies significantly contribute to advancements in brain sciences and artificial intelligence," Zhang noted. She expressed hope that Rehabilitation International will play an even greater role in creating an inclusive world where People of Determination can lead inspiring lives.

Conference Objectives

This year's conference aims to enhance life quality for People of Determination by identifying individuals leading change in rehabilitation. With over 190 speakers presenting 70 scientific studies across more than 30 sessions, it offers insights into successful countries' experiences in caring for these individuals.

The collaboration between Rehabilitation International (RI), the International Social Security Association (ISSA), and Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination underscores its importance. The opening ceremony saw attendance from diplomats, international figures, representatives from global organisations, along with UAE officials.
