Global Aerospace Summit 2024 In Abu Dhabi Focuses On Innovation And Sustainability In Aviation And Defence

The Global Aerospace Summit 2024 began in Abu Dhabi, uniting top leaders from aerospace, aviation, and defence. This seventh edition is pivotal for shaping these industries' future, focusing on sustainability, innovation, and talent development. These elements are crucial for ensuring long-term global growth.

Dr Mohamed Alahbabi, Senior Advisor & Space Lead at EDGE Group, participated in a panel on developing the UAE's defence industry. He highlighted strategic innovation and smart manufacturing as vital for enhancing the nation's defence capabilities. International partnerships were also emphasised as essential to this goal.

Dr Alahbabi stressed the UAE's significant investments in space and aerospace sectors. "The UAE continues to invest heavily in these sectors. The growth trajectory will continue with more satellites entering orbit, new companies being established, and greater investments in human capital. Space is fundamental to the advancement of science, innovation, and defence. We take pride in the UAE’s unparalleled achievements in these industries," he stated.

Salem Humaid Al Marri from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre delivered a keynote speech celebrating the UAE National Space Programme's achievements. He marked the fifth anniversary of Dr Sultan Al Neyadi’s first space mission and highlighted the nation's commitment to becoming a leader in space exploration.

Ali Rajab of GACA shared updates on Saudi air connectivity during a panel focused on Saudi Arabia's aviation sector transformation. Leaders like Osamah Alnuasier from Riyadh Air discussed ambitious plans for the sector's future.

Grainne van den Berg from Airbus highlighted their role in supporting Saudi Arabia’s aviation goals: "The Kingdom’s aviation sector is undergoing unprecedented growth, and Airbus is proud to support this transformation through sustainable aircraft innovations. Our strategic partnerships are driving the modernisation of fleets and supporting the ambitious goals of Vision 2030."

Technological Innovations in Aerospace

Technological advancements were central to discussions at GAS 2024. Josef Mouris from Electron Aerospace addressed challenges like CO2 charges impacting aviation. He noted that adapting strategic thinking is crucial as more small aircraft enter the market to meet regulatory standards.

Research and development were also discussed by Sharief Fahmy from KAMAN during a panel on R&D in aerospace. Fahmy praised the Middle East ecosystem for promoting talent development: "There's no better environment than the ecosystem that's been established here in the Middle East, and more specifically, in UAE and Abu Dhabi."

Etihad Airways' Strategic Focus

Antonoaldo Neves of Etihad Airways spoke about Etihad’s leadership in Abu Dhabi’s aviation landscape during an interview at GAS 2024. Neves elaborated on expanding their network and increasing passenger numbers while focusing on Emirati talent development.

"Etihad remains at the forefront of the UAE’s aviation sector, working towards expanding both our network and our workforce," said Neves. "We are committed to building long-term careers for Emiratis, from cadet pilots to senior executives."

The summit will continue exploring international partnerships and integrating space communications with Earth observation technologies. The UAE aims to strengthen its position as a global hub for aerospace innovation through events like GAS 2024.
