Gerard Piqué Highlights Kings League's Innovative Approach And Global Expansion Plans At Bridge Summit 2025
Gerard Piqué, a former Spanish footballer, has introduced the "Kings League," a novel approach to football aimed at engaging younger audiences. This initiative blends video game elements with traditional football rules, offering a fresh perspective on the sport. Piqué conceived this idea after retiring in November 2022, noticing that today's youth find it challenging to stay focused during a full 90-minute match.
Piqué's experience with FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team provided valuable insights for this project. He explained at the "Bridge Summit 2025" in Abu Dhabi that the Kings League features unique rules, such as player number changes through dice rolls and team owners taking penalty kicks. These innovations have attracted a large fan base since its inception and have led to expansion into 17 countries.

The league's global reach includes offices in Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Germany, France, and Saudi Arabia. Piqué emphasised the importance of understanding each market's culture and forming local partnerships to drive growth. He noted that adapting to how audiences consume content is crucial for success in different regions.
Fans play a central role in the league's development by participating in open voting on various aspects like rules and match details. For instance, millions voted within 24 hours to choose black as the official pitch colour. This engagement highlights the strong connection between fans and the platform.
Piqué revealed plans to expand into the United States soon, spurred by football's growing popularity there after Messi joined Major League Soccer. The upcoming FIFA World Cup in the US also presents opportunities for growth. Interest from countries like Nepal, Portugal, Turkey, Japan, and South Korea further indicates potential expansion.
The Kings League's entertainment-focused sports model aligns well with American audiences' preferences. Piqué believes this approach will resonate with fans seeking more interactive experiences. The league aims to continue evolving alongside changing sports consumption trends.
Spain’s World Cup Prospects
Reflecting on Spain's chances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Piqué expressed pride in being part of the 2010 World Cup-winning team. He highlighted Spain's promising new generation of players led by Lamine Yamal as strong contenders alongside Argentina, Germany, France, and Brazil.
Piqué stressed that while young people still follow sports, they do so differently now. The Kings League adapts to these changes by offering an innovative platform that combines sports with entertainment elements. This approach ensures continued engagement from diverse audiences worldwide.
