GCAA Conducts Workshops To Tackle Winter Weather Challenges In Aviation Operations
The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) recently conducted a workshop in Dubai with its strategic partners. The focus was on addressing challenges posed by weather fluctuations. Participants shared field experiences and best practices to enhance preparedness for future weather conditions. This event is part of a series planned by the GCAA across the UAE to ensure readiness for various weather scenarios.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, stated, "Organising these workshops is part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing the sector’s ability to effectively respond to future challenges and ensure the continuity of aviation operations at the highest levels of safety and efficiency, even in the toughest weather conditions."

The workshop was organised by the Aviation Safety Affairs sector within the GCAA. Around 30 representatives from different entities participated, including Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA), Dubai Airports, Dubai Air Navigation Services (dans), and others. The session focused on severe weather challenges like heavy rain, emphasising readiness to manage these conditions effectively.
Al Suwaidi further mentioned, "Strengthening cooperation among all involved parties is crucial to ensure a swift and efficient response to emergency weather conditions. Workshops like these provide an ideal platform to explore different potential scenarios and train teams to achieve the highest levels of readiness and coordination, ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers and the seamless flow of air traffic nationwide under any circumstances."
Participants discussed issues heavy rainfall could cause for aviation operations, such as flight delays and passenger congestion. They explored innovative solutions like developing airport drainage systems, streamlining traffic routes to airports, enhancing early weather-sensing technologies, and training ground and air crews for crisis management related to heavy rain.
This workshop aimed at ensuring smooth air traffic flow in Dubai during winter months from November to early March. It also focused on maintaining passenger movement efficiency within airports despite adverse weather conditions.
The GCAA's initiative reflects its commitment to maintaining high safety standards in aviation operations. By fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, they aim to ensure efficient responses during emergency weather situations.
