GCC Summit: Bahrain's Foreign Minister Emphasises Global Support For Regional Peace Efforts

Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani, highlighted the pride Gulf citizens feel in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) system. He emphasised that it effectively addresses their economic, security, and social needs. The GCC remains dedicated to fostering a secure and prosperous Middle Eastern environment.

During a press conference after the 46th GCC Summit in Bahrain, Al-Zayani and GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohammed Al-Budaiwi shared key summit outcomes. Al-Zayani noted that Gulf nations' calls for peace are gaining international attention. He mentioned the positive response from the U.S. President to Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince's invitation to work towards peace in Gaza and resolve the Sudan crisis.

The GCC Secretary-General discussed progress in joint defence cooperation among member states. They are developing a joint defensive shield system with strategic allies, which is advancing well. The readiness of this system will be announced when appropriate. Planned joint military exercises include a naval exercise and a major combined exercise for all forces in early 2027 in the UAE.

Al-Zayani welcomed Italy’s Prime Minister's participation in the summit, noting Europe's growing interest in strengthening ties with the GCC. Bahrain aims to elevate these relations to a strategic partnership encompassing economic, security, defence, technological, cultural, and educational fields. He highlighted strong growth in bilateral relations and trade with Italy.

On regional issues, Al-Zayani reaffirmed the GCC’s support for diplomatic efforts led by Saudi Arabia and Oman to stabilise Yemen while maintaining its unity and sovereignty according to the Gulf Initiative. Regarding Iran, he stated that Bahrain sees Iran as a neighbour and is open to restoring normal ties through ongoing communication.

King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain has directed clear priorities for Bahrain’s presidency term, endorsed by the Supreme Council. These priorities aim to unify and focus GCC efforts across various fields for Gulf citizens' benefit. A proposed mechanism will define priorities for each rotating presidency at every summit cycle's start.

The conclusion of the summit underscored the commitment of GCC states to peace and stability in the region. Their efforts continue to resonate globally as they work towards resolving conflicts and enhancing cooperation with international partners.
