WFP Reports Severe Hunger Crisis In Gaza As One In Three Go Days Without Food

The World Food Programme (WFP) has highlighted the severe hunger crisis in Gaza, describing it as having reached "new levels of desperation." The organisation reported that nearly one-third of the population is going without food for days. This dire situation has led to deaths among those seeking humanitarian aid.

Malnutrition is a growing concern, with 90,000 women and children urgently needing treatment. The WFP expressed alarm over an incident involving the Israeli army's attack on civilians waiting for aid, resulting in numerous deaths and critical injuries. These individuals were simply trying to obtain food for themselves and their families.

Gaza Faces Severe Hunger Crisis, Says WFP

The WFP noted that this violent event occurred despite promises from Israeli authorities to improve conditions for humanitarian operations. Assurances were given that armed forces would not interfere with humanitarian convoy routes. However, these assurances were not upheld, leading to tragic consequences.

The agency emphasised its commitment to operating independently, impartially, and neutrally. "We stand firmly by our principles of operating with independence, impartiality and neutrality. It is one of the many reasons why communities trust us," stated the WFP.

A significant increase in food aid distribution is crucial to stabilise the escalating crisis in Gaza. This would help alleviate fears and restore community trust that more food will be available soon. The WFP stressed the importance of scaling up efforts to meet the urgent needs of the population.

The organisation also called for an immediate ceasefire and guaranteed safe access for humanitarian aid throughout Gaza. This would ensure that life-saving assistance reaches those who need it most without any hindrance or danger.

International Community's Role

The WFP urged the international community and all involved parties to support and facilitate the delivery of essential food aid to Gaza's starving population. "We urgently call on the international community and all parties to advocate for, and facilitate, the delivery of life-saving food aid to starving populations inside Gaza – safely, securely, wherever families are, and without obstruction," emphasised the WFP.

Ensuring safe passage for aid convoys is vital in addressing this humanitarian crisis effectively. The agency's appeal highlights the need for coordinated global efforts to provide relief to those suffering in Gaza.
