GASTAT Unveils 2023 Household Energy Statistics Highlighting Consumption Trends In Saudi Arabia

The General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) has published the Household Energy Statistics for 2023. This report reveals that Riyadh Region leads in residential electrical energy consumption at 28.1%. Makkah Region follows with 25.5%, and the Eastern Region accounts for 16.7%. Al-Baha Region, however, consumes the least, with only 0.9% of the total.

In terms of appliance usage, water heating devices were used for an average of 62.1 hours weekly in 2023. Air conditioning units operated for about 51.5 hours each week. Heating appliances ran for an average of 17.9 hours weekly, while cooking appliances were used for around 6.8 hours per week.

GASTAT Releases Key Energy Statistics for 2023

A significant portion of households, about 92.1%, showed a strong interest in conserving energy. Additionally, 83.6% implemented energy-saving practices when using household appliances. Furthermore, 55.2% expressed willingness to invest in newer, more efficient appliances to replace older ones.

Interest in solar energy adoption was also noted, with 42.3% of households showing interest in integrating solar solutions into their homes. This indicates a growing trend towards sustainable energy sources within the Kingdom.

The report highlights that nearly all households, or 98.4%, use various energy sources for cooking purposes. Among these households, gas is the primary source for 89%, while electricity is used by 9.3%. A small fraction, about 0.1%, rely on alternative energy sources for cooking.

The publication's data comes from two main sources: the Household Energy Survey and administrative records from the Ministry of Energy. These insights provide a comprehensive view of how different types of dwellings across Saudi Arabia utilise diverse forms of energy based on their ownership status.
