Majlis Mohamed Bin Zayed Lecture Delves Into Healthcare Technology's Future
H.H. Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan graced the second of this year's Majlis Mohamed bin Zayed Ramadan lectures, focusing on the fusion of healthcare and technology. The event, held at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, featured a presentation by Dr. Catherine Mohr, President of the Intuitive Foundation, titled ‘Charting New Paths in Healthcare Technology.’
Dr. Mohr delved into the synergy between technology and healthcare, highlighting the benefits of robotic surgery and the application of AI and machine learning for patients, doctors, and medical students. She discussed how these emerging technologies are addressing complex healthcare challenges, particularly in diagnosing and treating conditions such as lung cancer. Dr. Mohr introduced a novel approach that combines a robotic catheter with machine learning algorithms to navigate the bronchial tree for biopsies and tumour removals, significantly reducing treatment times without invasive surgery.

The lecture also covered the educational advancements enabled by technology. Dr. Mohr emphasized how data analysis from millions of procedures performed through robotic surgery could enhance medical training by making surgeon’s movements observable and analyzable. This, she explained, is instrumental in understanding and teaching surgical expertise.
Furthermore, Dr. Mohr addressed the necessity of scaling surgical training to meet the demands of a growing population. She proposed that AI-based technologies could facilitate this expansion, even in regions with limited technological infrastructure, by allowing clinicians to self-teach and receive immediate feedback on their progress.
The session was moderated by Dr. Mishal AlQasimi, CEO of Capital Health Specialised Rehabilitation Hospital and Health Shield Medical Center. It also featured insights from Dr. Jorge Guzman of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Prof Humaid Alshamsi from Burjeel Medical City, Dr. Muna Tahlak from the International Hospital Federation, and Dr. Walid Zaher from Carexso.
The lecture ‘Charting New Paths in Healthcare Technology’ is scheduled for broadcast on Saturday 23 March at 5pm on local TV networks. It will also be accessible on the Majlis Mohamed bin Zayed YouTube channel for those unable to attend or watch the live broadcast.
This event underscores the significant strides being made at the intersection of healthcare and technology. By exploring innovative solutions like robotic surgery and AI, healthcare professionals are not only enhancing patient care but also revolutionizing medical education and training methodologies to prepare for future challenges.
