Fujairah Hospital Becomes First UAE Government Hospital To Achieve LEED Gold Certification For Sustainability
Fujairah Hospital has been recognised with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This award highlights the hospital's commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. It is the first government hospital in the UAE to achieve this certification, showcasing Emirates Health Services' (EHS) dedication to reducing environmental impact and optimising resources.
Dr. Ahmed Obaid Al Khadim, Director of Fujairah Hospital, expressed that this accomplishment reaffirms EHS's dedication to integrating top environmental practices in healthcare facilities. He stated, "Fujairah Hospital’s attainment of LEED Gold certification reaffirms EHS’s commitment to integrating best environmental practices across its healthcare facilities. This milestone marks a significant step towards achieving our sustainability goals, including efforts to reduce carbon footprint and enhance the quality of the indoor environment for both patients and staff."

Waheed Al Mulla, who leads the Facility Management and Administrative Services Department at EHS, emphasised that this achievement mirrors EHS's strategic initiatives to implement global sustainability standards across all its facilities. He noted, "This achievement reflects the success of EHS’s strategic efforts to implement global sustainability standards across all its facilities. EHS remains committed to leveraging advanced technologies and adopting effective strategies to minimise environmental impact, optimise costs and conserve resources. We will continue to enhance the efficiency of our facilities in alignment with the best environmental practices."
The LEED certification is a globally acknowledged system for evaluating buildings based on their environmental efficiency and sustainability. Buildings are assessed on criteria such as energy efficiency, sustainable material use, indoor environmental quality improvement, and reduction of environmental impact.
To meet these criteria, Fujairah Hospital executed a detailed plan involving an assessment of its operational status and infrastructure. This included analysing energy consumption patterns and implementing green initiatives aimed at boosting energy and water efficiency, improving waste management processes, and using environmentally friendly building materials.
Implementation of Environmental Policies
The hospital also established strict regulatory policies to monitor its environmental performance under the supervision of EHS's Facilities Management Department. These policies ensured compliance with USGBC requirements by collecting necessary data for evaluation. Such efforts were instrumental in meeting the standards required for LEED Gold certification.
This recognition not only highlights Fujairah Hospital's achievements but also reinforces EHS's ongoing commitment to sustainability in healthcare settings across its network.
