FOCP Highlights Key Initiatives At World Cancer Congress In Geneva To Support Cancer Patients

Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP), a UAE-based organisation, took part in the World Cancer Congress from 17th to 19th September in Geneva, Switzerland. They presented three abstracts to the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). These presentations highlighted FOCP's efforts in cancer awareness, early detection advocacy, and patient support. The organisation also showcased its community engagement and sustainable fundraising strategies.

The Pink Caravan initiative was another focus of FOCP's presentations. This campaign is part of the Pink October initiative and has made significant strides in breast cancer awareness. In 2023, it raised AED2.6 million through 411 events across the UAE. The medical team conducted 3,679 free screenings and distributed vouchers for ultrasounds and mammograms. The initiative engaged various social groups through numerous awareness events.

FOCP Presents Key Initiatives at Cancer Congress

During the conference, FOCP engaged with international organisations like the American Cancer Society and the Global Relay for Life team. Discussions centred on future partnerships and strategies for cancer prevention. They explored collaboration in research, early detection, and advancements in diagnostic medicine. The meetings also addressed reducing disparities in patient care to improve treatment outcomes.

The Zakat campaign, launched by FOCP in 2013, has been instrumental in supporting cancer patients financially. It has raised approximately AED21.8 million since its inception, aiding 2,190 patients. Last year alone saw AED4.7 million collected through this initiative.

The "Relay for Life" event held annually in Sharjah since 2017 was another highlight of FOCP's efforts. This global initiative has attracted over 9,000 participants and raised more than AED6 million to support cancer patients. Over 1,000 volunteers have contributed to its success.

Aisha Al Mulla led the FOCP delegation at the World Cancer Congress as Director of FOCP. Rashid Al Ameeri presented on "Zakat and Fundraising for Cancer Patient Care." Badr Qasem Al Jaaidi discussed "Community Fundraising for 24 Hours - Relay for Life Walkathon," while Jamila Ibrahim shared insights on "A Touching Success Story: The Pink Caravan’s Fundraising Efforts."

Impactful Volunteer Contributions

The Pink Caravan initiative benefited from significant volunteer involvement, with 193 volunteers contributing 1,530 hours alongside the medical team's 8,060 hours. These efforts have positively impacted patients and their families across the UAE.

Al Mulla stated that the conference was a vital platform to share expertise and expand the global impact of FOCP's initiatives. She noted that it strengthens strategic partnerships with international organisations and drives innovation in cancer patient support.

FOCP representatives also participated in workshops during the conference to enhance their understanding of global strategies for cancer control. These workshops focused on improving survival rates through better treatment outcomes.
