FNC Speaker Saqr Ghobash Meets Chairwoman Matviyenko Valentina To Enhance UAE-Russia Parliamentary Cooperation
Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC), recently held discussions with Matviyenko Valentina, Chairwoman of the Council of Federation of the Russian Federation. This meeting occurred during the 11th Nevsky International Ecological Congress (NIEC) in St. Petersburg, Russia. Several members of the FNC were present at this event.
Matviyenko Valentina expressed her appreciation for the participation of Saqr Ghobash and his delegation at the congress. She emphasised the robust bilateral relations between Russia and the UAE. Valentina highlighted the UAE's significant humanitarian and diplomatic contributions in resolving international crises, notably its role in facilitating prisoner exchanges amid the Ukraine crisis.
The discussions also explored ways to enhance parliamentary cooperation between the two councils. This reflects the strong strategic ties between the UAE and Russia, aiming to develop these relations on a foundation of friendship and collaboration across various sectors. Both parties agreed on maintaining coordination in regional and international forums to serve mutual interests.
Saqr Ghobash expressed gratitude to the Council of Federation for inviting them to participate in this international environmental conference. He commended the high level of organisation at NIEC and its growing reputation as a global platform for sharing ideas on environmental issues and sustainable development.
The FNC Speaker highlighted that their participation underscores the UAE’s commitment to collaborative efforts in tackling environmental challenges. He stressed that parliaments play a crucial role in supporting government initiatives aimed at addressing climate change and protecting natural resources.
He also mentioned that hosting COP28 demonstrates UAE’s leadership in climate action. The FNC organised a parliamentary conference alongside COP28, which included broad international participation, including from Russia, focusing on legislative support for climate initiatives.
Promoting Global Peace and Stability
Both leaders acknowledged that leadership meetings are vital for advancing bilateral relations and deepening strategic cooperation. These engagements lay a strong foundation for institutional communication, reinforcing strategic partnerships between nations and translating leadership directives into tangible initiatives benefiting both peoples.
Valentina praised UAE's efforts in facilitating 14 prisoner exchange operations involving over 3,700 individuals during the Ukraine crisis. These actions were well-received by all parties involved, including Russia, showcasing UAE's dedication to promoting global peace and stability through its principled approach.
The meeting concluded with both sides affirming their commitment to continued coordination in regional and international forums. They aim to support shared goals for building a sustainable future while enhancing cooperation across diverse sectors.
