Federal Tax Authority Uncovers And Seizes Over 3.5 Million Non-Compliant Excise Goods In Dubai Operation

A recent operation by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) inspectors in Dubai led to the seizure of a significant quantity of unauthorised excise goods. These items, including tobacco and beverages, were fraudulently packaged and smuggled into the UAE market. The operation highlights ongoing efforts to combat tax evasion and ensure consumer protection.

The FTA's inspection team discovered that these illegal goods were hidden within shipments of clothing and footwear. This activity was a clear breach of UAE tax regulations. As a result, all seized items have been permanently confiscated, with a tax assessment conducted and fines imposed on the involved parties.

FTA Seizes Over 3.5 Million Excise Goods

Over 3.5 million illegal items were confiscated during the operation. These included 1.56 million cigarette packs, 1.77 million packs of electronic smoking devices, 111,360 packs of raw tobacco, 4,000 hookah tobacco packs, 121 nicotine pouch packs, and 4,600 excise beverage packs. The tax owed on these products amounted to AED133.2 million.

Legal proceedings have been initiated against the establishments that failed to comply with the regulations. The FTA emphasised that producers, importers, and stockists must adhere to Federal Law No. 7 of 2017 on Excise Tax to avoid penalties.

The FTA employs advanced electronic control mechanisms to fight tax evasion effectively. This includes using digital tax stamps on tobacco products, which contain electronically registered data for verification by inspectors. These measures ensure that appropriate taxes are paid on all excise goods.

The FTA is committed to enhancing cooperation with federal and local authorities across all seven emirates in the UAE. This collaboration aims to ensure compliance with tax laws and maintain high standards in line with international practices.

The FTA's continuous monitoring efforts are crucial in maintaining tax compliance throughout the UAE. By working closely with relevant authorities, they aim to prevent non-compliance and protect consumers from illegal activities in the market.
