FANR Board Meeting Highlights Barakah Operations And Strengthens Global Ties In Nuclear Safety

The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) Board of Management held its fourth meeting in 2025. The Board received updates on various initiatives and strategies, including the Audit Plan status and preparations for the 2027–2029 strategy cycle. This cycle aligns with the national vision, "We the UAE 2031." The Board also discussed efforts to streamline processes through Zero Bureaucracy initiatives.

FANR's Director-General shared recent progress in regulatory oversight and cooperation at both national and international levels. The Board reviewed ongoing oversight activities at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant. This includes refueling Unit 4 and maintaining other units throughout 2025. FANR ensures these operations meet safety standards through rigorous inspections.

The Board also examined FANR's National Gamma Monitoring Expansion project. This initiative aims to broaden radiation monitoring capabilities across a wider area. It will integrate FANR's systems with regional and international networks to improve data sharing.

The establishment of National Laboratories for Cytogenetic and Internal Dosimetry was another key topic. These labs will enhance the UAE’s ability to assess radiation exposure among workers. They will also improve response capacity during radiological emergencies, adhering to international safety standards.

Additionally, several international agreements were approved to bolster cooperation in nuclear safety, safeguards, and research. These agreements involve partnerships with regulatory bodies from countries like France and the United States.

The Audit and Risk Committee Chair briefed the Board on FANR’s Audit Plan status, while the Development and Improvement Committee Chair discussed preparations for future strategies. These efforts align with national goals, ensuring FANR remains efficient and forward-thinking.

Overall, these discussions reflect FANR's commitment to maintaining high safety standards while fostering international collaboration in nuclear regulation.
