FANR Organises National Dialogue On Future Of Radiation Oncology And Patient Safety
The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) recently hosted its inaugural "Meet Your Regulator" event for 2025. The theme was "Radiation Oncology: Current & Future." Healthcare professionals and radiation oncology experts gathered to discuss trends in oncology, focusing on national and international frameworks and regulations for radiation protection of workers and patients.
Participants highlighted the importance of radiological imaging in radiotherapy oncology. They explained how it aids treatment planning and adaptive strategies. Standardised radiological reviews were also discussed, emphasising their role in enhancing clinical accuracy, ensuring patient safety, and adhering to protocols.

Strategic solutions to existing challenges in radiotherapy were a key focus. Discussions included the need to standardise guidelines and protocols aligned with technological trends in radiation oncology. The potential use of AI and digital tools in cancer diagnostics and treatment was also explored.
Expanding capacity-building programmes to meet future staffing needs was another topic of interest. Participants considered cooperation in research and development crucial. Plans were discussed to establish a dedicated task force under the Radiation Protection Committee (RPC) to coordinate nationally with health authorities.
Aayda Al Shehhi, FANR’s Director of Radiation Safety, stated, "We are committed to fostering collaboration between regulators and healthcare professionals to ensure the highest standards of radiation safety. This event provided a vital platform to exchange expertise, align on best practices, and explore innovations shaping the future of radiation oncology in the UAE."
FANR showcased its contributions towards developing the UAE’s radiation protection infrastructure. This includes cooperation with international organisations like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the International Committee for Radiation Protection (ICRP). FANR chairs the RPC, advising the UAE government on radiation protection matters.
Upcoming Events and Initiatives
The UAE aims to be a leader in healthcare innovation and medical tourism as part of its "Forward Society" pillar under the "We the UAE 2031" vision. This vision seeks to provide high-quality healthcare for all. In October 2025, FANR will host the 8th International Symposium on Radiological Protection Systems organised by ICRP.
This symposium will gather experts from around the world to exchange expertise and strengthen cooperation in radiological protection. Such initiatives underscore FANR's commitment to advancing healthcare standards while ensuring safety through effective regulation.
