How This Company's Precision Engineering Propelled The Success Of UAE's MBZ-SAT Satellite Deployment
The UAE has achieved a significant milestone in space exploration with the successful deployment of MBZ-SAT, its most sophisticated Earth observation satellite. This achievement underscores the nation's growing prowess in space technology and exemplifies the "Make It In The Emirates" campaign, which promotes local manufacturing and innovation.
Falcon Mechanical Group, a precision engineering company based in the UAE, played a crucial role in the satellite's development by providing 90% of its mechanical subsystems. This collaboration between Falcon and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) highlights the capacity of UAE-based companies to contribute to complex, internationally recognized projects. It also reflects the government's dedication to driving innovation and self-reliance among its industries.

The partnership with MBRSC was a remarkable opportunity for Falcon Mechanical Group, allowing it to demonstrate its capabilities on a global stage. "We are honoured to have partnered with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre on the MBZ-SAT project," stated Rejin Jose Kurian, Managing Director of Falcon Group of Companies. He further emphasized the project's alignment with the UAE's initiative to empower local companies, marking a significant step towards achieving groundbreaking achievements.
Falcon's involvement in the MBZ-SAT project entailed the production of 2,520 precision-engineered parts, ranging from the satellite's mainframe structures to complex electrical circuit boxes. Each component was crafted to fulfill the strict standards required for space missions, showcasing Falcon's expertise in precision engineering and its vital role in supporting the UAE's space exploration goals.
Developing components that meet astronautical-grade precision posed significant challenges, pushing Falcon's team to innovate and develop proprietary techniques for working with specialized materials, such as aluminium alloy and titanium. This experience not only honed the company's precision engineering skills but also prepared it for future projects. The collective efforts of supervisors, programmers, operators, and coating specialists were essential in maintaining the high quality and precision necessary for the satellite's components.
Since its inception in 2012, Falcon Mechanical Group has evolved from offering repair and maintenance services for aerospace components to becoming a prominent player in aerospace manufacturing. Its initial collaboration with the Emirates Institute for Advanced Science and Technology (EIAST), now known as MBRSC, laid the groundwork for its success in the aerospace industry. Rejin Kumar, Innovations Head at Falcon, credited the company's adoption of 5S and Lean methodologies for fostering a disciplined and efficient work environment, enabling continuous skill enhancement and refinement among its employees.
By embracing continuous improvement and investing in advanced technologies, Falcon has expanded its capabilities to meet the demands of space exploration. These efforts have not only contributed to the success of the MBZ-SAT launch but have also positioned Falcon as a trusted partner in various sectors, including aerospace, defence, oil & gas, and industrial manufacturing, both regionally and globally.
"Our goal is to continue pushing the boundaries of precision engineering and contributing to the UAE's mission to explore and innovate," said Rejin. He views the MBZ-SAT project as not only a source of pride but also as a stepping stone for Falcon Mechanical Group to play a more significant role in future projects that will enhance the UAE's technological landscape.
This journey from humble beginnings to a leader in aerospace manufacturing underscores Falcon's commitment to excellence and innovation, promising a bright future for the UAE's space programme and the nation's broader technological ambitions.
