SPL Celebrates Its Centenary With ‘Exhibition Of The Lens Of Literary Beginnings’ Showcasing Influential Emirati Authors

The Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL) has launched the ‘Exhibition of the Lens of Literary Beginnings’ at 06 Mall in Al Juraina, Sharjah. This event marks SPL's centenary by highlighting the UAE’s rich literary heritage. In collaboration with the Emirates Writers Union, the exhibition will run until 4th May, inviting visitors to explore early works and biographies of five influential Emirati authors.

The exhibition pays tribute to Ahmad Amin Al Madani, Habib Al Sayegh, Maryam Jumaa Faraj, Ahmad Rashid Thani, and Salem Al Hattawi. Through their early publications and personal stories, visitors can learn about these figures who laid the foundation for modern Emirati literature. By showcasing their achievements, the exhibition aims to inspire future generations to view these literary giants as role models in their creative pursuits.

Eman Bushulaibi, Director of Sharjah Public Libraries, expressed that "The UAE has long been home to prominent literary and intellectual figures who have played an integral role in shaping the cultural landscape and establishing the foundation of a knowledge-based society. Their contributions have paralleled the growth and academic evolution of SPL, serving as inspirations for future generations and launching platforms for literary and intellectual exploration that stand as a source of national pride today."

An interactive feature invites visitors to write messages about reading on a vintage typewriter. This offers a personal connection to the literary journey. Additionally, a mini cultural café enhances the experience by providing a space for reflection and fostering a lively literary atmosphere.

According to Eman Bushulaibi, "Shining a spotlight on these figures and celebrating their journeys is both a tribute to their legacy and a call to action for the next generation. This exhibition serves as an invitation to carry forward a sustainable knowledge project rooted in our rich cultural heritage and to help shape a future that honours and builds upon these enduring contributions."

The exhibition not only celebrates past achievements but also encourages visitors to engage with literature actively. By doing so, it hopes to inspire new generations to contribute to the UAE's cultural identity through literature.
