EWEC And Dmg Events Forge Clean Energy Partnership For Key Global Conferences

Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has announced its commitment to supply renewable and clean energy to the 2024 World Utilities Congress and the 6th Arab Water Forum. This will be achieved through Clean Energy Certificates (CECs). This marks the third consecutive year that EWEC has partnered with dmg events to provide renewable energy for the World Utilities Congress, hosted by TAQA.

The 6th Arab Water Forum, co-located with the World Utilities Congress and organised by dmg events, will also receive CECs for the first time. This ensures that the forum is fully powered by renewable energy sources. EWEC’s provision of CECs aims to decarbonise these events' energy consumption and reduce Scope 2 emissions.

Clean Energy for Global Conferences

CECs are digital certificates that adhere to the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard). They are recognised internationally in Abu Dhabi as proof of ownership of the benefits derived from renewable energy consumption. These certificates help entities meet their sustainability goals.

The World Utilities Congress will take place in Abu Dhabi from 16th to 18th September. It serves as a global platform for energy leaders, policymakers, innovators, and industry professionals in the power and water utilities sectors. The event will address rapid changes and challenges in the utilities sector while fostering collaboration for innovative solutions.

Notable attendees at the World Utilities Congress include Suhail Bin Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE’s Minister of Energy and Infrastructure; Jasim Husain Thabet, Group CEO and Managing Director of TAQA; Luc Rémont, Chairman and CEO of EDF; Yousif Al Ali, CEO of Etihad Water and Electricity; Ali Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and CEO of Tadweer Group; and Shannon McCarthy, Secretary General of the International Desalination and Reuse Association.

Commitment to Decarbonisation

Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, expressed pride in extending their strategic partnership with the World Utilities Congress. He highlighted their mission to decarbonise key economic sectors in Abu Dhabi and support the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 initiative. "Our partnership demonstrates a shared commitment towards boosting Abu Dhabi’s sustainability," he said.

Christopher Hudson, President of dmg events, echoed this sentiment. "We are thrilled to deepen our collaboration with EWEC," he stated. Hudson emphasised that this partnership aligns with their goal to foster innovation in the global water and utilities industry while supporting sustainability targets.

Arab Water Forum Highlights

The 6th Arab Water Forum will feature prominent speakers such as Prof. Mahmoud Abu-Zeid, President of the Arab Water Council; Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States; Madam ZHU Chengqing, Vice Minister of China’s Ministry of Water Resources; Loïc Fauchon, President of World Water Council; Abdallah Bin Ibrahim, Chairman of Saudi Water Authority; and Prof. Safwat Abdel Dayem from Egypt's National Water Research Centre.

EWEC plays a crucial role in Abu Dhabi’s CECs scheme by acting as a Single Registrant and auction operator. This establishes a primary market for CECs. EWEC has also formed strategic clean energy partnerships across various sectors including energy, real estate, healthcare, events, and sports.

This initiative underscores a collective effort towards sustainability within Abu Dhabi's economic framework while contributing significantly to global environmental goals.
