EtihadWE And Ministry Of Energy Launch Initiative To Boost Renewable Energy In Northern Emirates
EtihadWE has joined forces with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) to advance renewable energy in the Northern Emirates. The Distributed Solar System (DSS) project allows EtihadWE customers to generate solar power using rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems. This energy will be integrated into the grid, boosting renewable energy supply.
The DSS project, initiated in July 2023, began with a feasibility study assessing financial and technical impacts of connecting these systems to the grid. EtihadWE, in collaboration with MoEI, has established regulations and technical guidelines for these systems.

This initiative aligns with directives from President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for sustainable energy development in the UAE. It aims to enhance renewable energy accessibility, reduce carbon footprints, and promote cleaner energy sources.
EtihadWE will act as the certified installer, providing approved contractors to ensure solar panels meet current safety standards. Customers from residential, industrial, and agricultural sectors will have access to rooftop PV systems for generating solar power.
Although consumers won't directly use the generated solar energy, they will benefit from lower energy bills by contributing to the renewable grid. Customers will have two metres: one for exported energy and another for imported energy. Monthly comparisons of exports versus imports will determine if excess energy is credited to their accounts for use within the year.
The project supports the UAE Energy Strategy 2050's long-term goals by increasing clean energy generation's contribution to 32 percent. It ensures alignment with the UAE Consensus commitment to triple renewable energy share by 2030.
Community Engagement and Economic Impact
Sharif Al Olama, Under-Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI, stated that "The DSS project is a major contribution to the UAE’s shift to clean energy sources. It reflects our commitment to fast-tracking renewable energy deployment and the country’s sustainable development." He emphasized its role in enhancing global competitiveness rankings.
Yousif Ahmed Al Ali, CEO of EtihadWE, remarked that this solar initiative significantly advances EtihadWE's efforts in promoting renewable energy in the Northern Emirates. He highlighted their dedication to adopting new technology for improved operations while committing to sustainability.
Future Plans and Workshops
The project will initially focus on industrial customers before expanding further. Businesses are expected to see reduced operational costs and develop more sustainable models through this initiative. EtihadWE plans workshops to educate customers about the project's benefits and encourage broader adoption of solar solutions.
This collaborative effort represents a significant step towards a future powered by sustainable energy, aligning with government directives for a cleaner environment.
