Etihad Rail And CSP Abu Dhabi Enhance Logistics In GCC With New Partnership
In a significant move to enhance logistics and connectivity within the UAE, Etihad Rail has entered into a strategic partnership with COSCO SHIPPING Ports Abu Dhabi Container Freight Station (CSP AD CFS). Through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the collaboration is set to advance CSP AD CFS's supply chain efficiency and broaden its service outreach not only across the UAE but also throughout the wider Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
As the largest Container Freight Station in the region and a key subsidiary of the globally recognized ports operator COSCO SHIPPING Ports Limited, CSP AD CFS will leverage the expansive UAE National Railway Network. This integration facilitates a streamlined transportation of goods between Khalifa Port and several vital logistics hubs and industrial zones across the UAE. Utilizing Etihad Rail's extensive network and strategically situated freight terminals, CSP AD CFS is poised to achieve more productive use of time and resources alongside more efficient asset management.

This partnership underscores both entities' commitment to sustainability, aiming to reduce the reliance on road transport. Notably, the UAE National Rail Network is designed to significantly cut down CO2 emissions in the road transport sector by 21% annually by 2050, equating to a reduction of 8.2 million tonnes of CO2 each year. This initiative is in line with the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, highlighting a shared vision for a more sustainable future.
Gunther J. Ferk, CEO of Etihad Rail Freight, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, noting that integrating rail into CSP AD CFS's operations at Khalifa Port is a testament to Etihad Rail's dedication to providing safe, reliable, and sustainable transport solutions. "This collaboration will connect one of the country’s primary ports with catchment areas, enabling goods to move seamlessly within the regional supply chain," Ferk remarked. He emphasized that the enhanced logistics capabilities would attract more businesses to the region, bolstering the UAE's status as a global trade hub and contributing to the diversification of the national economy.
On the other hand, Yu Bin, General Manager of CSP Abu Dhabi CFS at COSCO SHIPPING Ports, highlighted the milestone this partnership represents in bolstering their logistics and transportation capabilities. "By integrating rail transport into our service offerings, we aim to improve the connectivity between our facilities and key markets, reduce transit times, and lower our carbon footprint," Yu stated. He emphasized the commitment to innovation and operational excellence and the anticipated positive impact on the logistics landscape in the region.
Enhancing Logistics Operations
Moreover, the collaboration will see Etihad Rail's freight rail terminals being utilized as storage and distribution centres for CSP AD CFS's goods. This strategic use of inland locations for the consolidation and deconsolidation of cargo streamlines logistics operations significantly. The establishment of a new rail corridor under this partnership will enable CSP AD CFS to expand its services within the UAE, improving proximity to import and export points and thereby enhancing its market presence further.
CSP Abu Dhabi Terminal at Khalifa Port, a sister company of CSP AD CFS which began operations in December 2018, plays a pivotal role in CSP's expansion into the Middle East. Designed to manage a substantial volume of container traffic, the terminal boasts an annual handling capacity of 2.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), with plans underway to increase this capacity to 3.5 million TEUs.
This strategic alliance between Etihad Rail and CSP AD CFS marks a significant step forward in not only advancing supply chain efficiency within the UAE and the wider GCC region but also in promoting sustainable and innovative transportation solutions. Through such collaborations, the UAE continues to strengthen its position as a pivotal logistics and trade hub on the global stage.
