Etihad Airways And China Eastern Airlines Officially Launch Joint Venture To Enhance Travel Connectivity

Etihad Airways and China Eastern Airlines have officially launched their Joint Venture (JV) at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai. This collaboration marks a significant milestone for both airlines, enhancing connectivity between the UAE and China. The JV follows the successful arrival of China Eastern's inaugural flight from Shanghai to Abu Dhabi on 28th April, celebrated with a ceremony at Zayed International Airport.

The new service initially offers four weekly flights, with plans to increase to daily flights starting 12 September 2025. This expansion aims to strengthen travel links between the two nations. Additionally, a new agreement was signed between their loyalty programmes at the Arabian Travel Market on 29th April, allowing members of Etihad Guest and Eastern Miles to earn and redeem miles across both airlines' networks from 1st June 2025.

The JV, first announced in June 2024, is now operational, providing seamless connectivity and an expanded network. This partnership highlights the strong ties between the UAE and China by offering more travel options for passengers travelling between major Chinese cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Xi’an, and Kunming, and key cities in the UAE and beyond.

Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer of Etihad Airways, expressed enthusiasm about this development: "The official launch of our Joint Venture with China Eastern is a major leap forward—not just for our two airlines, but for the future of both the UAE and China. By combining our networks and aligning our loyalty programmes, we’re not only expanding choice and connectivity for our guests but also setting the foundation for a new era of cooperation, innovation, and shared success across our markets."

Wan Qingchao, Executive Vice President of China Eastern, highlighted the significance of this partnership: "The launch of the Shanghai-Abu Dhabi route and the implementation of the joint business cooperation with Etihad Airways are key achievements in advancing our shared vision under the Belt and Road Initiative. Backed by a modern Zayed International Airport, we will further enhance our transit capabilities and improve travel convenience for passengers."

This partnership represents the first Joint Venture between a Middle Eastern airline and a Chinese airline. It sets an example for future bilateral aviation agreements. Both airlines plan to continue aligning in areas such as codeshare flights, joint marketing initiatives, and customer experience enhancements.

The collaboration between Etihad Airways and China Eastern Airlines signifies a new chapter in aviation partnerships. It promises enhanced travel experiences for passengers while strengthening economic ties between the UAE and China.
