Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi Achieves LEED Gold Award For Sustainable Building Design
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has been honoured with the LEED Gold certificate for sustainable buildings by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This accolade highlights EAD's dedication to energy efficiency, environmental stewardship, and sustainability at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre in Al Ain.
Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, remarked on this achievement: "Winning the LEED Gold certificate for the management of the Plant Genetic Resources Centre building in Al Ain is a pivotal achievement that affirms Abu Dhabi's unwavering commitment to spearhead global environmental leadership. Guided by our strategy rooted in responsible practices, we are committed to establishing a new benchmark by transforming our assets and facilities into highly efficient, sustainable ecosystems – ensuring a more prosperous future for generations to come."

The Plant Genetic Resources Centre plays a crucial role in preserving seeds and tissues of native wild plants and agriculturally important local species in the UAE. This initiative reflects EAD's commitment to integrating sustainability efforts across its facilities. The agency aims to achieve energy efficiency and optimal resource management, reinforcing its dedication to building a sustainable future.
The recognition was earned by meeting stringent certification criteria. These included a 75.1% reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, alongside a 53.49% decrease in water usage. The centre also generates 581,077 kilowatt-hours annually using on-site photovoltaic solar panels.
EAD's efforts have significantly reduced energy consumption and emissions at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre. By implementing advanced systems, they have achieved notable reductions in both areas. The use of renewable energy sources further underscores their commitment to sustainability.
This award not only acknowledges EAD’s achievements but also sets a benchmark for others aiming for similar goals. It demonstrates how strategic planning and responsible practices can lead to significant environmental benefits.
The LEED Gold certification serves as a testament to EAD’s leadership in environmental conservation. Their initiatives are paving the way for more sustainable practices within the region, ensuring a better future for upcoming generations.
