Environment Agency Abu Dhabi Utilises Drones To Disperse 6.5 Million Native Seeds For Biodiversity

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has completed its 2025 native seed dispersal programme in nature reserves, using drones to enhance biodiversity. Partnering with UK-based Dendra, the initiative involved aerial seeding through custom-designed drones. This effort aligns with Abu Dhabi’s Climate Change Strategy and covered 320 hectares, many seeded for the first time.

Ahmed Al Hashmi, Executive Director of the Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector at EAD, remarked on the project's scale: "We successfully implemented one of the largest drone-based seeding operations ever undertaken in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, within a notably short timeframe." This achievement highlights EAD's commitment to using advanced technology for environmental sustainability.

Abu Dhabi Disperses Native Seeds with Drones

The use of drones allows EAD to cover large areas quickly compared to manual methods. This technology is particularly useful in remote or hard-to-reach locations, reducing environmental impact by eliminating the need for vehicles. The initiative dispersed 6.5 million seeds from native species across diverse habitats.

In Jebel Hafit National Park's mountainous slopes and wadi habitats, seeds like Samar (Vachellia tortilis) and Moringa (Moringa peregrina) were spread. For Qasr Al Sarab Nature Reserve's sand dunes, species such as Fire Bush (Calligonum polygonoides) and Rimth (Haloxylon salicornicum) were distributed. These efforts aim to restore native plant life effectively.

Seeding is just the start; EAD will monitor these areas over time. Using AI-powered sensors and advanced monitoring technologies, they will track vegetation growth. This ongoing assessment ensures that the programme's objectives are met and helps refine future strategies.

The drone-based seeding initiative is part of broader efforts by EAD to study natural rangelands. Launched in 2024 and continuing into 2025, these programmes provide a comprehensive assessment of vegetation conditions. They serve as benchmarks for evaluating grazing regulations and other environmental management measures across Abu Dhabi.
