Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi Becomes First UAE Regulator To Achieve Carbon Neutrality Certification Twice
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has achieved its second Carbon Neutrality Certification from Applus+, a UNFCCC-accredited verification agency. This makes EAD the first regulatory body in the UAE to earn this certification twice, reinforcing its dedication to fighting climate change and advancing environmental sustainability in Abu Dhabi.
Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, remarked on this achievement: "Receiving the Carbon Neutrality Certificate for the second time underscores EAD's deep commitment to building a sustainable future for Abu Dhabi. By offsetting our carbon emissions for the 2020–2022 period, we are not only setting a benchmark for government entities, but also inspiring our peers in government, and challenging the private sector to embed sustainable practices into their core operations. We believe this milestone will accelerate our collective journey towards net-zero emissions, solidifying Abu Dhabi's role as a regional leader in environmental stewardship."

EAD's comprehensive strategy for carbon neutrality involves pinpointing emission sources like energy use in buildings, chilled water usage, waste production, and fuel consumption in vehicles and generators. GE3S assessed these emissions, with Applus+ verifying them. The Agency is committed to reducing its energy consumption and environmental impact through eco-friendly technologies and sustainable practices.
To further reduce its carbon footprint, EAD is transitioning its vehicle fleet to hybrid power. This shift aims at cutting down fuel use and emissions significantly. Additionally, all lighting systems have been upgraded to energy-efficient LED technology with sensors installed to optimise resource use and minimise waste.
EAD is making significant strides by integrating solar panels into all new projects. This move harnesses renewable energy for operations while aligning with LEED Zero Carbon standards. Such initiatives contribute to reduced energy consumption and lower carbon emissions across their facilities.
Environmentally friendly air-conditioning systems have been adopted throughout EAD facilities as part of their commitment to sustainability. Smart water systems have also been installed to further optimise resource use.
Inspiring Broader Climate Efforts
This accomplishment serves as an inspiration for broader climate efforts, urging other organisations to incorporate targeted carbon management strategies into their operations. EAD continues leading the charge toward net-zero emissions while maintaining its leadership in environmental stewardship.
