ENEC Joins EGA’s Challenger Programme To Promote Gender Diversity Across UAE Industry
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has announced that Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) has joined the Challenger Programme. This initiative, supported by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, was introduced in November 2023 to enhance gender diversity within UAE industries. The programme unites key industrial players in traditionally male-dominated sectors to promote inclusive hiring practices and empower women in the workforce.
Women constitute 20% of ENEC's workforce, a notable figure in the global nuclear energy sector. They hold significant positions in engineering, operations, nuclear safety, and leadership. Since 2014, ENEC has led the Barakah chapter of Women in Nuclear and now oversees the Middle East Chapter of this international organisation.

The Challenger Programme focuses on joint initiatives among its member companies to foster progressive workplace cultures. Recent efforts include creating a gender diversity toolkit aimed at establishing inclusive policies throughout an employee's career in heavy industry. This toolkit is designed to guide companies in implementing equitable practices.
With ENEC joining, the Challenger Programme now comprises nine prominent UAE industrial firms. The programme collaborates with NAMA Women Advancement as a strategic advisor and knowledge partner to further its objectives.
Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of EGA, emphasised the importance of gender diversity for unlocking potential within heavy industry. He stated, "Achieving gender diversity in heavy industry is not just the right thing to do, it is essential to unlocking the full potential of our sector." He highlighted that diverse teams are stronger and more innovative.
Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of ENEC, expressed enthusiasm about joining the programme. He said, "Women are at the heart of our achievements at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant." He noted that this partnership allows ENEC to learn from other leaders while supporting talented women entering advanced industries.
EGA's Commitment to Diversity
EGA employs 714 women in the UAE, with over 330 working in operational roles. The company is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where diverse teams can thrive. By participating in initiatives like the Challenger Programme, EGA aims to accelerate progress towards gender equality across various sectors.
The addition of ENEC marks a significant step for the Challenger Programme as it continues to expand its reach and impact. Through collaboration and shared experiences among member companies, the programme seeks to create more opportunities for women within UAE industries.
