ENEC Joins Forces With General Atomics To Advance Nuclear Energy Technologies

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has recently entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with General Atomics (GA), a prominent US-based company specializing in advanced technology solutions. This collaboration aims to leverage cutting-edge technologies and materials to enhance the nuclear energy supply chain. The partnership will also explore the potential of utilizing ENEC's expertise in new nuclear builds alongside investments in GA's advanced non-light water reactors, material production, and 3D manufacturing capabilities. This agreement was formalized on the sidelines of CERAWeek, held in Houston, USA.

As part of this MoU, ENEC and GA Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) are set to investigate several collaborative projects. These include the utilization of GA-EMS' SiGA® cladding for nuclear reactor applications and the development of Fast Modular Nuclear Reactor designs. Silicon carbide cladding is anticipated to enhance the safety and cost-effectiveness of existing light water reactors while reducing outage times. This innovative material is also earmarked for use in the US Department of Energy-funded Fast Modular Reactor (FMR) design, among other advanced or Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) that employ high temperatures for efficient electricity production.

ENEC, General Atomics Advance Nuclear Tech

ENEC, as the UAE's designated nuclear energy developer, is actively exploring growth opportunities to broaden and improve the nation's nuclear energy sector. The corporation is currently evaluating various development, investment, and partnership proposals. These proposals span across large-scale reactors, SMRs, and advanced reactors aimed at generating clean electrons and molecules such as steam, hydrogen, and ammonia. Additionally, these initiatives seek to provide process heat for diverse industries.

Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of ENEC, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with General Atomics. "Having successfully developed the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, the largest single source of clean electricity in the UAE, we are now focused on building international partnerships to drive innovation and R&D in new clean energy solutions," he stated. Al Hammadi further highlighted the Barakah Plant as a catalyst for technological advancement and global cooperation towards achieving Net Zero targets.

Scott Forney, President of General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems, also commented on the collaboration. "GA-EMS brings decades of expertise in developing advanced fuels, silicon carbide cladding to enhance fuel rod safety and durability, and Fast Modular Nuclear Reactor designs offering greater efficiency, safety, and economics," Forney remarked. He expressed excitement about working with ENEC to explore opportunities that leverage these transformational technologies for a safer and more secure energy future.

The Barakah Plant stands as a testament to ENEC's commitment to advancing the nuclear energy sector. Having efficiently delivered all four units of the plant, ENEC has established the first multi-unit operational nuclear plant in the Arab world. The operational teams have successfully brought a unit into commercial operation annually since 2021, showcasing steady progress and extensive megaproject management expertise. Each of the four APR-1400 pressurised water reactors at the Barakah Plant is capable of producing up to 1,400 megawatts of clean electricity.

This partnership between ENEC and General Atomics signifies a pivotal step towards enhancing nuclear energy technologies and materials. It underscores a shared commitment to innovation and sustainable energy solutions that can contribute significantly to global efforts in achieving cleaner energy sources.
