Emma Raducanu Secures Dominant Victory Over Maria Sakkari In Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships

Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, began her Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships journey with a victory over Maria Sakkari. The match took place under the lights on Centre Court, where Raducanu won 6-4, 6-2. This event marks the 25th anniversary of the women's tournament in Dubai, and Raducanu is participating as a wildcard.

Raducanu's performance was noteworthy as she had been struggling with four consecutive losses and three first-round exits before arriving in Dubai. Despite these setbacks, she managed to break Sakkari's serve early in the match to gain an advantage. Although Sakkari fought back to level the set, Raducanu regained her lead without losing a point.

Raducanu Advances After Defeating Sakkari

Raducanu expressed satisfaction with her ability to stay focused during the match. "I just tried to stay focused on what was in front of me," she said. Her composure allowed her to regroup after being broken in the first set and regain control of the game.

In the second set, Raducanu again broke Sakkari's serve but briefly lost her lead in the fourth game. However, she quickly regained it by capitalising on Sakkari's errors and eventually secured a 5-2 lead. Serving for the match, she thrilled the crowd with a powerful ace down the middle.

The two players have faced each other only at Grand Slams before this match. Raducanu has consistently defeated Sakkari without dropping a set. When asked about playing against Sakkari, Raducanu commented: "It’s a difficult one… In a way, we play quite similar – she’s very athletic."

Raducanu will now face Karolina Muchova in the second round after Muchova defeated Suzan Lamens 6-2, 6-2. Meanwhile, Elina Svitolina easily overcame Anna Kalinskaya with a score of 6-1, 6-2 earlier that evening. This victory marked Svitolina's tenth appearance in Dubai.
