Emirati Women Leading Political Empowerment Journey In The UAE's Federal National Council

The UAE has set a notable example in empowering women politically, driven by a belief in their capabilities to make significant contributions across various sectors. This empowerment is crucial for the nation's sustainable development. In 2019, the UAE made a historic decision to increase women's representation in the Federal National Council (FNC) to 50%. This move positioned the UAE as a leader in female parliamentary representation within the Arab world and globally.

Emirati women's journey in the FNC began in 2006 when they participated as voters and candidates. By 2007, during the 14th legislative term, nine women held seats, representing 22.5% of the Council. The subsequent terms saw varying numbers of women until reaching equal representation in 2019, continuing through to the current term in 2023.

In 2015, Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi made history by becoming the first woman to lead a parliamentary institution in the Arab world as Speaker of the FNC. Several FNC members have highlighted that Emirati women's political empowerment showcases a successful model of partnership and complementarity within the UAE.

Amna Ali Salem Ali Al Odaidi praised the UAE's efforts in empowering women politically, crediting this success to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's legacy and H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak's support. She noted that these efforts have enabled women to become true partners in national decision-making processes.

Maryam Majid bin Theneya remarked that Emirati Women’s Day serves as an annual celebration of women's achievements across all fields, particularly politics and legislation. She emphasised that empowering women to reach parliament reflects a vision where comprehensive development requires balanced gender participation.

Mona Khalifa Hamad affirmed that Emirati women have consistently been vital partners in nation-building and shaping its future towards sustainable development and global leadership. Aisha Rashid Laitim added that this political empowerment is rooted in a long-standing approach since the Union's early days.

Sumaiya Abdullah Salim bin Hareb Al Suwaidi highlighted that Emirati women's leadership presence results from a comprehensive vision providing equal opportunities across sectors like education, professions, and politics. Aisha Ibrahim Al Marri noted that women have become active partners in shaping national policies due to wise leadership directives.

Mona Rashid Tahnoon stressed that these accomplishments wouldn't be possible without consistent support from leadership and confidence in women's abilities to contribute significantly to nation-building efforts.
