Emirati Women Achieve Historic Milestones In Gender Equality And Economic Empowerment In 2024

In 2024, Emirati women significantly contributed to the UAE's major accomplishments. Their influence expanded across various sectors, reflecting the nation's commitment to empowering women. The UAE climbed to 7th globally and maintained its top regional spot in the UN Gender Equality Index 2024, as reported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The UAE government saw increased female representation with Sana bint Mohammed Suhail's appointment as Minister of Family. This followed the creation of a new ministry dedicated to family affairs. Additionally, the National Policy for Improving Women's Health was launched, aiming to provide comprehensive healthcare access for women throughout their lives.

Historic Milestones for Emirati Women in 2024

To boost women's roles in economic development, the Ministry of Economy mandated that private joint-stock companies reserve at least one board seat for women after current terms end. This directive will take effect in January 2025, promoting diversity in business leadership as part of a broader economic empowerment strategy.

A memorandum was signed between the Ministry of Economy and the General Women's Union to enhance communication and unify efforts towards women's economic empowerment. This partnership aims to increase women's participation in commercial activities and strengthen their role in sustainable economic development.

The General Women's Union initiated the second phase of the Women's Economic Empowerment Programme. This programme equips Emirati women with skills across various sectors, focusing on entrepreneurship. It supports women in starting or expanding small and medium-sized enterprises.

During the 2024 UAE Government’s annual meetings, an agreement was reached between the Emirati Talent Competitiveness Council and the UAE Gender Balance Council. This agreement aims to boost Emirati women's participation in the private sector through collaborative initiatives and programmes.

Educational Achievements and Leadership Roles

Women comprised 70% of university graduates in the UAE, making up 46% of the workforce. Of these, 68% were employed in public sector roles. They held nearly one-third of ministerial positions and occupied half of the Federal National Council's seats.

This year has underscored Emirati women's pivotal role in shaping national progress. Their achievements reflect successful policies aimed at empowering them across all facets of society.
