Emirati Film 'Mountain Boy' Set To Premiere In GCC Cinemas On April 17, 2025

The feature film "Mountain Boy," a collaboration between Desert Rose Films and Fujairah Films, is set to premiere in UAE cinemas on 17th April 2025. The Plot Pictures will distribute the film across the GCC. The movie aligns with World Autism Month, celebrated every April, and will have an exclusive premiere at CinemaCity, Al Qana, Abu Dhabi on 15th April. Attendees will include the full cast, crew, and children from the Mohammed bin Rashid Centre for Special Education.

"Mountain Boy" tells the story of Suhail, a young Emirati boy with autism who escapes to the Fujairah Mountains after being misunderstood by his father. The film is based on Michele Ziolkowski's book "The Boy Who Knew The Mountains." It features a predominantly Emirati cast and crew, including director Zainab Shaheen and lead actor Naser Salah. Supported by Abu Dhabi Film Commission's rebate initiative, the project highlights Emirati culture and heritage.

'Mountain Boy' Premieres in GCC Cinemas April 17

Suhail embarks on a journey with Barakah, an Arabian Saluki, to find his mother's family in Abu Dhabi. This quest for acceptance and redemption reflects the UAE’s Year of Community 2025 objectives. Mohamed Dobay of Creative Media Authority expressed pride in supporting such projects that showcase Emirati narratives while challenging perceptions around autism.

Filmed entirely in the UAE over 35 days in 2023, "Mountain Boy" showcases locations like Samaliyah Island and Dibba Mountain. More than 32 UAE-based companies contributed to its production. Nancy Paton of Desert Rose Films highlighted the importance of staying true to Michele Ziolkowski’s narrative by using Emirati actors and crew. The all-female Firdaus Orchestra provided the soundtrack.

Director Zainab Shaheen expressed pride in her directorial debut that captures national talent and compelling storytelling. She emphasized how telling such impactful stories fuels her passion for filmmaking. Since completion, "Mountain Boy" has been submitted to 38 festivals globally, winning 22 awards including Best Young Actor at Chelsea Film Festival.

Global Recognition and Distribution

Pratixa Shah from The Plot Pictures noted their mission to share regional stories globally through films like "Mountain Boy." The film blends regional essence with cultural heritage while addressing neurodiversity themes. As one of 180 productions supported by Abu Dhabi Film Commission recently, it benefits from diverse locations and professional talent.

Nancy Paton shared that nearly giving up hope during casting led them to discover Naser Salah as Suhail. His audition alongside his sister Reem was pivotal in finding their leads. This dedication to authenticity underscores the film's commitment to representing Emirati culture accurately while highlighting important social issues.

"Mountain Boy" stands as a testament to community power and acceptance through its narrative about Suhail's journey for belonging amidst challenges faced due to autism perceptions within society today—showcasing rich storytelling intertwined with cultural heritage elements throughout its cinematic portrayal onscreen effectively engaging audiences worldwide upon release next year across various platforms regionally internationally alike!
