Emirates Steel Initiates Low-Carbon Iron Production Project In Partnership With Japanese Firms
Saeed Khalfan Al Ghafri, CEO of Emirates Steel, has announced a new initiative in Abu Dhabi to produce low-carbon iron. This project, in collaboration with Japanese partners, aims to address the rising global demand for environmentally friendly products. The announcement was made during the Fastmarkets Middle East Iron & Steel 2024 event held in Dubai from 18th to 20th November.
Al Ghafri stated that the project is currently undergoing a feasibility study with its partners. Commercial production is anticipated to commence by 2027. He emphasised that this venture signifies a strategic expansion for Emirates Steel both locally and internationally. The company is committed to developing innovative technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of its products.

The Green Iron project, which utilises hydrogen as a clean energy source, remains in its experimental phase. Efforts are ongoing to enhance technical aspects and lower costs. Al Ghafri highlighted that Emirates Steel's future focus will be on projects with sustainable dimensions, requiring substantial initial investments.
In partnership with Masdar, Emirates Steel is concentrating on a feasibility study and future expansion plans for the Green Iron project. Al Ghafri stressed the importance of prioritising innovation and sustainability over merely increasing their current output of approximately 3.5 million tonnes of steel and iron.
Al Ghafri explained that while new innovations initially incur high costs, these decrease over time as production scales up, making products more accessible. He noted that support from government bodies and financial institutions is crucial during early innovation stages when technology costs are elevated.
As projects progress, financial partnerships can yield strong investment returns. Al Ghafri also mentioned the carbon capture steel project launched by Emirates Steel in 2017. This initiative successfully captures around 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually for use in oil well injection.
Global Market Expansion
This carbon capture project exemplifies Emirates Steel's ability to leverage innovation for global sustainability goals. It has attracted international visitors to Abu Dhabi eager to witness this pioneering experience firsthand.
Al Ghafri affirmed that Emirates Steel is not solely focused on meeting local demand but also aims to strengthen its position in global markets through sustainable strategies and robust international partnerships.
The emphasis on sustainability and innovation underscores Emirates Steel's commitment to reducing environmental impact while expanding its global reach. By investing in new technologies like green iron and forming strategic partnerships, the company aims to lead in eco-friendly steel production worldwide.
