Emirates Expands Air Cargo Fleet With Five Additional Boeing 777 Freighters

Emirates has committed to expanding its cargo capabilities by ordering five additional Boeing 777 freighters, scheduled for delivery between 2025 and 2026. With these new orders, Emirates will have a total of 14 Boeing 777Fs awaiting delivery by the end of 2026. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance its fleet and meet growing demand.

By December 2026, Emirates SkyCargo aims to operate a fleet of 21 production-built Boeing 777 freighters. This expansion will significantly increase from its current fleet of 11 units. Additionally, Emirates has extended a multi-year lease with Dubai Aerospace Enterprise for four existing Boeing 777Fs in its fleet.

The airline is also converting ten passenger Boeing 777-300ERs into freighters to further boost capacity. H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, stated, "We're investing in new freighter aircraft to meet surging demand and provide our customers around the world with even more flexibility, connectivity, and options to leverage market opportunity."

Emirates' air cargo services are experiencing high demand, highlighting Dubai's status as a key global logistics hub. The success of Emirates SkyCargo's tailored solutions for various industry sectors also contributes to this growth. Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, remarked on the partnership: "Emirates continues to set the direction for our industry, and we deeply appreciate the trust they have placed in the Boeing widebody family to serve as the backbone of their global fleet."

The Dubai government plans to expand Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), aiming to create the world's largest hub by capacity. Once completed, DWC will handle up to 12 million tonnes of cargo annually. This development supports the growth of the nearby Logistics District, envisioned as an international base for global cargo and shipping companies.

While integrating new freighters into its operations, Emirates' cargo division will continue using its all-wide-body passenger fleet. This approach ensures fast and efficient global goods movement with a diverse fleet mix that includes 777s, 777-Fs, 747Fs, A350s, and A380s.

Future Fleet Considerations

Looking ahead, Emirates plans to decide on its future freighter fleet for beyond 2028/29 by the end of this year. The contenders include the Boeing 777-8F and Airbus A350-1000F models. These decisions will shape Emirates' long-term strategy in maintaining its position as a leader in air cargo services.

This strategic expansion reflects Emirates' commitment to meeting increasing market demands while enhancing flexibility and connectivity for customers worldwide.
