Emirates Environmental Group Emphasises Sustainable Packaging Innovations For Health And Environment

The Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) recently concluded its fifth and final panel discussion for 2024, focusing on sustainable packaging solutions. The event, titled "Packaging Innovation: Influence on Environment and Health," underscored the urgent need for eco-friendly and cost-effective packaging that considers both social and environmental impacts. This discussion explored the effects of packaging in today's society, highlighting its challenges, opportunities, and influence on health and the environment.

In her opening remarks, Habiba Al Mar’ashi, Co-Founder and Chairperson of EEG, stressed the significant impact of packaging choices on global health and the environment. She urged collective efforts towards sustainable packaging innovation. "Our packaging choices profoundly affect our planet and health. The innovations we pursue can either protect or harm future generations. Together, we must forge a path to sustainable packaging," she stated.

The panel featured experts from various sectors who shared insights on the environmental impacts of packaging. Speakers included Dr. Iman Ibrahim, Dr. Salam Al Sharif, Omar Jaber, and Miguel Garat. They discussed topics such as sustainability breakthroughs and the role of packaging in public health. Attendees from both public and private sectors participated in an interactive Q&A session that encouraged critical discussions on industry challenges and opportunities.

Dr. Iman Ibrahim pointed out that 47 percent of plastic waste originates from packaging, with the UAE spending US$700 million on it in 2024. She advocated for innovative biodegradable designs suitable for food packaging to address this issue effectively.

Omar Jaber from CANPACK Middle East emphasised the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainable packaging goals. He highlighted that diverse expertise is crucial to creating a greener future through effective partnerships across sectors.

Miguel Garat highlighted the potential of transforming recycled plastic into modular building solutions. He noted the benefits of using plastics that might otherwise end up as waste, thus contributing positively to environmental sustainability.

Promoting Eco-Friendly Practices

Dr. Salam Al Sharif stressed starting sustainable practices at home by promoting aluminium recycling and eco-friendly packaging options. His insights underscored how individual actions can collectively contribute to broader environmental goals.

The panel also reviewed the industry's role in sustainable development, emerging designs, and new policies related to packaging innovation. Key issues discussed included emissions contributions by the industry, economic impacts of packaging, and AI's potential in design innovation.

Sustainable Development Goals Addressed

The discussion covered Sustainable Development Goals like Climate Action, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Good Health and Well-being. These goals align with EEG's broader mission to promote sustainability across various sectors through informed dialogue.

The session ended with a dynamic Q&A segment where participants engaged actively with speakers to explore further insights into sustainable practices within the industry.

Throughout 2024, EEG has conducted five panel discussions addressing key topics such as sustainable packaging, climate fund transparency, economic stability, and social stability. Since its inception in 1992, EEG has held a total of 215 sessions moderated by its Co-Founder and Chairperson alongside partners like Arabia CSR Network supported by Emirates Green Building Council among others.
